I am representing a UK-based aerospace engineering company developing and flight-testing a heavy-lift rotary-wing UAV for defence and commercial applications. The team designs and builds its own aircraft, giving engineers the opportunity to work across the full development lifecycle from engineering through to flight testing.
We're looking for a Flight Test Engineer to join a small multidisciplinary engineering team and take ownership of ground and flight testing across the aircraft programme. This is a hands-on role combining flight test planning, practical aircraft testing, data analysis, technical documentation and regulatory compliance. You'll work closely with design and workshop teams and have a direct influence on aircraft development.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate and execute ground and flight test activities
- Produce flight test plans and manage the wider test programme
- Conduct aircraft ground testing and flight trials
- Capture, analyse and interpret test data
- Produce technical test reports and documentation
- Develop test rigs, equipment and test methods
- Complete risk assessments and maintain test documentation
- Manage NOTAMs, permissions, licences and test-site requirements
- Support SORA applications and CAA compliance
- Work closely with Design Engineers and Workshop Technicians to prepare aircraft for testing
- Identify improvements to aircraft performance, safety and future test activities
Skills & Experience Required
- Experience within aerospace, UAV, defence, aviation or another highly regulated engineering environment
- Strong flight test, experimental engineering or systems integration experience is advantageous
- Excellent planning and organisational skills
- Strong technical report writing and written communication
- Ability to analyse and interpret engineering/test data
- Experience working independently within a multidisciplinary engineering environment
- Understanding of flight operations, testing and aircraft development
- Exposure to CAA regulations, SORA, flight operations or certification is beneficial, although training can be provided
- Practical, hands-on approach to engineering and testing
This is an opportunity to join a small engineering team and help build the flight test capability from the ground up, working directly on the development of a heavy-lift UAV from workshop through to flight.
