Java | CI/CD | Monolith Refactoring | Technical Roadmapping | Cloud Migration
SR2 is supporting a high-profile discovery project focused on assessing and modernising three legacy digital services for a public sector client. We\’re looking for a Senior Java Developer with a growing focus on solution architecture — someone who can stay hands-on with the code while also shaping strategy and long-term technical direction.
The engagement will start with a technical discovery and assessment phase, focused on understanding the current state and recommending a future path to refactor and migrate to cloud .
Key Responsibilities:

• Lead technical analysis of legacy services — codebases, architecture, CI/CD, infrastructure
• Identify risks, constraints, and opportunities for modernisation and cloud readiness
• Provide architectural input to roadmap and cloud migration strategy
• Stay hands-on with code where needed — support service refactoring and prototyping
• Work with delivery leads to shape a practical next-phase delivery plan

Tech Environment:

• Java , Git, Jenkins, AWS
• Mix of legacy service components with varying CI/CD and infra maturity
• Potential travel to client site in the North East (occasional, not full-time)

Ideal Experience:

• Strong Java engineering background , with experience across legacy and modern stacks
• Recent experience working in a technical/solution architecture role
• Familiar with legacy patterns — monoliths, outdated libraries, unsupported databases
• Experience planning and delivering refactoring and cloud migration projects
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Comfortable working in early-phase discovery and shaping phases

• Outside IR35
• Day rate: £450-£475
• 6 months
• Mainly remote, very occasional on-site (monthly) in the North East
• Start: ASAP
