Senior Power Electronics Test & Validation Engineer

Reading | On-site | Permanent

We’re looking for a Senior Power Electronics Test & Validation Engineer to help build the test capability behind a new generation of high-performance electric propulsion systems.

This is a hands-on power electronics role. You’ll initially focus on characterising and benchmarking motor controllers/inverters, before expanding the test programme into electric motors and complete drive systems.

There isn’t an established test plan or mature lab waiting for you. You’ll have the freedom to decide what needs testing, how to test it and what equipment and infrastructure are needed to do it properly.

What you’ll be doing

  • Characterise inverters/motor controllers across their operating range, including efficiency, electrical losses, thermal behaviour, derating and control response
  • Build and commission test rigs using oscilloscopes, current probes, power analysers, loads, supplies and DAQ equipment
  • Benchmark products against competitor hardware and turn the results into meaningful engineering recommendations
  • Develop automated testing and data acquisition using Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB or similar
  • Work closely with hardware and firmware engineers around sensing, control interfaces and telemetry
  • Expand testing into motors, including dynamometer testing, torque/speed/efficiency mapping and endurance testing
  • Help establish the wider test facility and verification capability as the business scales

What we’re looking for

You’ll ideally come from a power electronics, inverter, motor controller, converter or electric-drive background with strong hands-on testing experience.

We’re particularly interested in people who have:

  • Strong practical electrical measurement experience
  • Tested power electronics using oscilloscopes, current probes and power measurement equipment
  • Worked safely with high-voltage/high-current systems
  • Built or automated test environments rather than simply followed existing test procedures
  • Experience with Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB or similar for test automation/data acquisition

Motor and dynamometer testing experience would be valuable, but you don’t need to be an expert in both motors and power electronics.

The priority is finding someone with strong electrical/power-electronics test experience who wants the ownership to build a test capability from the ground up.

If you enjoy being on the bench, building rigs and finding out what hardware really does, this could be a very interesting opportunity.
