p strong Principal Backend Engineer | London | Hybrid /strong /p p br /p p We’re working with an exciting high-growth FinTech looking for a Principal Backend Engineer to lead the technical evolution of their backend platform. /p p br /p p This is a deeply technical, hands-on role for someone who enjoys making difficult architectural decisions, setting a high engineering bar and building systems that can scale with confidence. /p p br /p p What you’ll be working with /p ul li strong TypeScript / Node.js / NestJS /strong /li li strong AWS Docker /strong /li li strong MySQL / relational databases /strong /li li strong High-volume data processing and distributed workflows /strong /li li strong Typed APIs and integration contracts /strong /li li strong Event-driven architecture and reliable processing /strong /li li strong Observability, resilience and operational excellence /strong /li /ul p br /p p What you’ll be doing /p ul li Own the technical direction and architecture of the backend platform /li li Design scalable systems capable of handling millions of records and events /li li Establish clear boundaries between application, data and delivery layers /li li Build robust, well-typed APIs and processing workflows /li li Improve reliability through idempotency, retries, observability and failure isolation /li li Lead technical design reviews and raise engineering standards /li li Mentor engineers through code reviews and technical pairing /li li Drive improvements across scalability, security and maintainability /li li Use AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools to improve development, testing and technical workflows /li /ul p br /p p What were looking for /p ul li Principal / Staff-level backend engineering experience /li li Deep experience with NestJS, Node.js and TypeScript /li li Strong AWS and Docker experience /li li Experience designing high-scale backend and data systems /li li Excellent API and systems architecture skills /li li Strong understanding of distributed/event-driven systems /li li Experience with relational databases such as MySQL /li li Strong understanding of reliability, observability and failure modes /li li Ability to influence technical direction without needing formal people management /li li Excellent engineering judgement and a pragmatic approach to technical decisions /li li An AI-native mindset and interest in using AI to increase engineering leverage /li /ul p br /p p The opportunity /p p This isnt a traditional management role.
