Head of Machine Learning - Enterprise AI Agents
Location
London - 2/3x a week on site
We're working with a venture-backed enterprise AI company building and deploying intelligent agents for complex, regulated organisations.
Their agents connect with existing enterprise systems, interpret unstructured information and complete multi-step operational workflows.
The focus is on building reliable AI systems that deliver measurable business outcomes-not simply impressive prototypes.
They're hiring a Head of Machine Learning to own the intelligence layer of the platform.
You'll set the technical direction across agent architecture, retrieval, evaluation and learning while remaining hands-on with the company's most difficult engineering challenges.
- What you'll be doing
- Define the ML and agent roadmap across orchestration, tool use, retrieval, memory and model selection
- Take agentic systems from prototype through to secure, monitored production deployments
- Build evaluation frameworks covering task success, groundedness, reliability, latency, cost and safety
- Work with forward-deployed teams and enterprise customers to translate complex workflows into technical solutions
- Make key architectural and build-versus-buy decisions
- Establish engineering standards across ML development, testing and deployment
- Design guardrails, auditability and human-in-the-loop controls
- Hire and lead a team of Applied ML and Agent Engineers
- Remain hands-on with architecture, prototyping and critical technical problems
- What we’re looking for
- 7+ years of experience building production ML or applied AI systems
- Recent hands-on experience developing LLM-powered products or AI agents
- Strong Python and ML engineering fundamentals
- Experience with agent orchestration, tool calling, APIs and retrieval-augmented generation
- A strong understanding of evaluations, observability, fallbacks and failure handling
- Experience owning systems across data, modelling, deployment, monitoring and iteration
- Experience deploying technology into enterprise or regulated environments
- Previous technical leadership, mentoring or team-building experience
- Comfortable working in an early-stage, 0-to-1 environment
- Able to communicate effectively with engineers, founders and senior customers
- Multi-agent or long-running agentic systems
- Financial services, insurance, legal, healthcare or another regulated industry
- Model routing, fine-tuning, synthetic data or reinforcement learning from feedback
- Forward-deployed engineering or customer-facing technical delivery
- Supporting enterprise technical discovery and sales processes
- Open-source contributions, technical writing or public speaking
- Own a company-defining technical function
- Build agents that complete real enterprise workflows
- Influence the product, architecture and commercial strategy
- Work directly with customers on complex deployment challenges
- Build the ML team around your technical vision
- Competitive salary and meaningful equity
