We're working with a major public sector digital programme looking to bring in an experienced Lead DevOps Engineer to help shape, deliver and optimise cloud-native infrastructure across a large-scale, high-availability environment. This role will suit someone who combines deep hands-on engineering capability with strong technical leadership experience. You'll play a key role in defining DevOps best practice, improving platform reliability, and supporting the delivery of secure, scalable services within a complex multi-team ecosystem.

The Role

You'll be leading the design and evolution of modern cloud infrastructure, driving automation across deployment and operational processes, and supporting engineering teams with platform capability, reliability and scalability. The environment is heavily AWS-focused with Kubernetes at the centre of the platform strategy, alongside modern CI/CD tooling, Infrastructure as Code and strong operational engineering practices.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the design and implementation of secure AWS-based infrastructure
  • Driving Infrastructure as Code adoption using Terraform
  • Designing and improving CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or Jenkins
  • Supporting and optimising Kubernetes environments (EKS)
  • Leading platform observability, monitoring and alerting strategies
  • Driving operational resilience, scalability and automation across services
  • Supporting containerisation and microservices-based architectures
  • Working closely with architects, developers and security teams across the programme
  • Mentoring engineers and helping establish DevOps best practices across teams
  • Supporting incident management, troubleshooting and root cause analysis activities

Essential

  • Strong experience operating as a senior or lead DevOps engineer within complex environments
  • Deep AWS cloud experience across networking, compute, IAM and managed services
  • Strong Terraform experience for Infrastructure as Code
  • Experience managing and scaling Kubernetes platforms, ideally EKS
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD tooling and deployment automation
  • Experience with container technologies including Docker and Kubernetes
  • Strong scripting or automation capability with Python, Bash or similar
  • Experience implementing monitoring, logging and observability tooling
  • Understanding of secure-by-design principles and DevSecOps practices
  • Experience working within highly regulated or enterprise-scale environments

Desirable

  • Experience with service mesh technologies such as Istio
  • Knowledge of GitOps tooling such as Flux or ArgoCD
  • Experience with Kafka or event-driven architectures
  • Public sector or healthcare environment experience
  • Familiarity with security and compliance standards within cloud platforms
  • Experience mentoring or leading platform engineering teams
