In this hands-on role, you will work primarily on the mechanical and electromechanical performance of complex laboratory automation systems, including motion systems, fluid handling mechanisms, and precision assemblies. You’ll work with advanced liquid handling systems and sample management solutions, developing expertise in system-level testing across cutting-edge instruments.
This is an opportunity to:
- Work on meaningful technology used in real-world scientific applications.
- Develop strong technical skills in mechanically testing complex, integrated systems.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary R&D teams.
- Contribute ideas that influence product quality and performance.
- Build experience across both new product development and sustaining engineering.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Perform hands-on system level testing of complex electromechanical instruments.
- Support new product development from early concept and prototyping through development and release.
- Contribute to product sustaining activities, including issue investigation, root cause analysis, and regression testing.
- Work across a broad range of products covering liquid handling and sample management systems.
- Develop, execute, and maintain structured test plans, test methods, and test results documentation.
- Design, build, and operate prototypes and test rigs to support development and testing activities.
- Act as a fully embedded member of multi-disciplinary R&D project teams, working day to day with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to identify risks, influence design decisions, and improve overall system robustness.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Experience working as a test engineer in an R&D or product development environment.
- Strong system level testing capability, including end to end workflows and subsystem interactions.
- Experience testing complex automated, robotic, or electromechanical systems.
- Practical, hands-on approach with strong debugging, fault-finding, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience applying structured and repeatable test approaches, with a clear understanding of requirements and evidence-based decision-making.
- Ability to produce clear, concise, and proportionate technical documentation to support development and decision-making.
- Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary engineering teams.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Education and Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering or a related technical discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience in a product development or R&D environment.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in life sciences, laboratory automation, or scientific instrumentation.
- Familiarity with IEC 61010 safety requirements.
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management principles and their application in product development environments.
- Awareness of machinery safety legislation, such as the Machinery Directive / Machinery Regulation, and its impact on product design and testing.
- Experience contributing to the development or improvement of formalised test practices within an R&D environment.
- Exposure to automated liquid handling or sample management systems.
