To provide an overnight sitting service for patients at the end of life. The Night Sitter will provide care, where appropriate, and enable family members to take a break from their caring duties knowing that the patient is being closely monitored and cared for in their own home.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver care within the scope of individual competency.
- Provide emotional and psychological support to patient and family.
- Respond to any change in the patient's condition appropriately, calling on the support of the Hospice Nursing team, District Nurses and/or GP as required.
- Maintain appropriate written/electronic documentation of care given and any significant changes/interventions.
- Provide effective handover after the night sit to the Community Care Coordinator/Liaison or SPCN during the weekend.
- Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times in accordance with GDPR.
- Promote privacy and dignity in all aspects of patient care.
- Work on the in‑patient unit at Springhill Hospice when a community night sit is not required.
- Work flexible hours across 7 days, including weekends.
Education & Training
- Attend Springhill Hospice induction training programme.
- Attend mandatory training programmes and online training as required.
- New starter induction on the in‑patient unit tailored to each individual.
Personnel & Communication
- Report to senior Hospice staff as appropriate.
- Participate in the appraisal process.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ensure confidentiality of patient and family at all times.
- Ensure excellent time‑keeping.
- Attend staff meetings.
General
- Read, understand and comply with all Hospice policies and procedures.
- Be aware of individual specific responsibilities in respect of safeguarding vulnerable adults.
Candidate Profile
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual. The ideal candidate will provide an overnight sitting service for patients at the end of life and be able to work independently in the patient’s own home. Previous experience of caring for patients with palliative care needs and/or patients at the end of life is essential.
Qualifications & Experience
- Essential: Previous experience of caring for patients with palliative care needs and/or patients at the end of life.
- Desirable: Experience of working within a Hospice or Community environment, good attendance and punctuality record, enthusiasm and motivation, self‑awareness and mature outlook, flexible approach to work, car owner, empathetic and compassionate nature, excellent communication skills, confidence to care for patients at the end of life, ability to provide emotional and psychological support, evidence of working with patient assessments and care plans, evidence of attending workshops or study days relevant to the field of practice, desire to increase knowledge and skills within palliative care.
