Salaried GP

The Salaried General Practitioner (GP) plays a key role in delivering high-quality, compassionate and patient-centred primary care to the practice population. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, the postholder will provide comprehensive medical services, managing both acute and long-term conditions while promoting health, wellbeing and disease prevention. The role requires excellent clinical judgement, effective communication and a commitment to delivering safe, evidence-based care. The Salaried GP will contribute to the ongoing development of practice services, support quality improvement initiatives and help ensure the practice meets its contractual, regulatory and clinical governance responsibilities. Main duties of the job include:

• Delivering safe, effective, evidence-based and patient-centred medical care to the practice population.
• Assessing, diagnosing and managing a wide range of acute and long-term health conditions through face-to-face, telephone and digital consultations.
• Providing holistic clinical care, prescribing safely in accordance with national and local guidance, undertaking home visits where clinically appropriate, and making timely referrals to secondary care, community services and other healthcare professionals.
• Managing clinical correspondence, pathology and diagnostic results, prescriptions, medical reports and other administrative duties, ensuring accurate clinical coding, comprehensive record keeping and effective use of clinical systems.
• Working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to support integrated care, contribute to the management of long-term conditions, deliver preventative healthcare and health promotion.
• Contributing positively to service development, supporting colleagues, promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, maintaining patient confidentiality, and upholding the values of the practice by fostering a culture of respect, collaboration, learning and continuous improvement to deliver the highest standards of patient care.

Job responsibilities include:

• The delivery of highly effective medical care to the entitled population.
• The provision of services commensurate with the primary care contract.
• Clinically examining and assessing patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective and planning clinical care accordingly.
• Generic prescribing adhering to local and national guidance.
• Prioritising health problems and intervening appropriately to assist the patient in complex, urgent or emergency situations.
• Effective management of long-term conditions.
• Supporting patients to adopt health promotion strategies that promote healthy lifestyles and apply principles of self-care.
• Processing of administration in a timely manner, including referrals, repeat prescription requests and other associated administrative tasks.
• Reviewing medications following the appropriate policies, NICE/local clinical guidelines and local care pathways.
• Maintaining accurate clinical records in conjunction with good practice, policy and guidance.
• Working collaboratively, accepting an equal share of the practice workload.
• Adhering to best practice recommended through clinical guidelines and the audit process.
• Supporting the delivery of anticipatory care plans.
• Contributing to the successful implementation of continuous improvement and quality initiatives within the practice.
• Accepting delegated responsibility for a specific area (or areas) of the QOF.
• Attending and contributing effectively to practice meetings as required.
• Contributing effectively to the development and maintenance of the practice including clinical governance and training.
• Being aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhering to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children.
• Ensuring compliance with the appraisal process.
• Preparing and completing the revalidation process to remain fit to practice.
• Committing to self-learning and instilling an ethos of continuing professional development across the practice team.
• Reviewing and always adhering to practice protocols and policies.
• Encouraging collaborative working, liaising with all staff regularly, always promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
• Being an integral part of the general practice team as well as supporting the wider network and multi-disciplinary team.
• There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks, this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels.

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the Salaried GP has the following wider responsibilities:

• Participating in the spectrum of clinical governance processes.
• Participating in formal training events promoting best practice in area of expertise.
• Providing leadership and education for members of the multi-disciplinary team, providing guidance and support when necessary.
• Participating in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.

Person Specification:

Qualifications:

• Qualified GP MRCGP Vocational Training Certificate or equivalent.
• JCPTGP Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT).
• Full GMC registration.
• Performers list registration.
• Indemnity.
• Occupational health clearance.
• Flexibility to work outside of core office hours.
• Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) commensurate with the role.
• Access to own transport and ability to travel across the locality on a regular basis.

Experience:

• Ability to both work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Experience of working in a primary care environment.
• Experience of providing home visits.
• Minimum of two years as a salaried GP.
• General understanding of the primary care contract.
• Proven ability to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of own clinical practice.
• An appreciation of the NHS landscape and relationship between individual organisations, PCNs and the commissioners.

Clinical knowledge and skills:

• Outstanding level of clinical knowledge and skills commensurate with that of an experienced GP.
• Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice.
• Good MS Office and clinical system IT knowledge.
• Understanding of the spectrum of clinical governance processes.
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral) including recording of accurate clinical notes.
• Knowledge of health promotion strategies.
• Ability to work within own scope of practice and understand when to refer to GP colleagues.
• Experience of triage and the ability to effectively assess and diagnose.
• Ability to listen whilst being honest and caring and be both sensitive and empathetic in distressing situations.
• Understanding of the local pathology tests processes and the ability to process the results with advising patients accordingly.
• Ability to assess and manage acute deteriorations/exacerbations of long-term conditions.
• Understanding of safeguarding adults and children.
• Understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice.
• Experience of medicines management.
• Knowledge of public health issues in the local area.
• Understanding and knowledge of QOF and enhanced service.
