About The Brand
BMC has more than 25 years of experience in developing open access and provides high-quality, impactful research and a supportive publishing experience for authors. We are committed to publishing the best open access journals in our portfolio of over 250 titles and we strive to drive progress in biology, health sciences and medicine.
About the Role
The BMC Series is a collection of community-focused, open access journals covering all areas of science and medicine. The journals operate on the principle that editorial decisions are based on the rigor and validity of the science, rather than perceived impact or level of interest. We are seeking an additional Team Manager to join the BMC Series. In this role, you will lead and develop a global team of professional editors responsible for managing a portfolio of journals, ensuring high editorial standards and the effective performance of journal operations across the portfolio. You will support editors in developing and delivering journal strategies, driving consistent performance and growth in line with broader BMC Series objectives. In addition to your team leadership responsibilities, you will act as Lead Editor for one BMC Series journal, with direct responsibility for its editorial performance and day-to-day management. The Team Manager is a key member of the BMC Series management team and reports to the Executive Editor. You will work closely with them to support the overall performance and reputation of the BMC Series, contributing to strategic planning and operational excellence, and collaborating with global colleagues to deliver high-quality author service while upholding the highest standards of research integrity. The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis and can be based in our London or New York office on a hybrid working pattern.
Role responsibilities:
- Lead, recruit, and develop a team of internal editors, setting clear performance objectives, providing coaching and feedback, and creating a collaborative, high-performing team environment.
- Oversee the strategic development and performance of a portfolio of BMC Series journals, supporting editors in growing their titles, strengthening editorial quality, and engaging effectively with their research communities.
- Use performance data and portfolio metrics to monitor journal pipelines, track progress against goals, and identify opportunities to support journal growth and strategic development.
- Drive operational excellence across the editorial team, ensuring efficient workflows and delivering a high standard of service for authors, reviewers, and editorial board members.
- Build and maintain strong relationships within the global research community, enhancing the reputation and visibility of the BMC Series and Springer Nature.
- Lead and support outreach and market development activities, working to expand author communities, strengthen institutional relationships, and grow the presence of the BMC Series in strategically important key regions.
- Represent the BMC Series at conferences, institutional visits, and community engagement events, and travel to other Springer Nature hubs as required.
- Contribute to initiatives across the wider BMC Series and Fully Open Access portfolio, sharing insights, best practices, and supporting broader strategic priorities.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications:
- PhD (or equivalent research experience), with a strong understanding of the academic research and publishing landscape.
- Substantial editorial experience in scholarly publishing, including manuscript handling for peer-reviewed journals and a strong understanding of editorial and peer review processes.
- Good understanding of the scientific research community and its evolving needs, including trends in scholarly communication and open access publishing.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with researchers, editors, and institutional partners and represent the journals confidently at meetings and events.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving ability, with a proactive approach to identifying opportunities.
- Ability to manage priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Highly organised, self-motivated, and results-oriented, with the ability to work independently while contributing to team success.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally, including to the US, Europe, and Asia.
