Overview
In this role you will lead GDPR/UK GDPR compliance for Springer Nature and steward data protection governance across the group. You’ll coordinate cross-functional initiatives, advise on risks, and act as the primary contact for authorities. You will work closely with GRC, Legal, and business teams to embed privacy by design and ensure responsible data processing. The position offers strategic influence, direct access to senior leadership, and the chance to shape data protection at scale in a global publishing environment.
Responsibilities
- Inform and advise on GDPR/UK GDPR obligations across the group
- Coordinate with supervisory authorities and maintain accountability
- Advise on Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and monitoring
- Track regulatory developments and inform management on impact
- Work with Governance, Risk & Compliance and Legal on AI Act & GDPR/UK GDPR compliance
- Design and deliver staff awareness and training on data protection
- Map data protection risks into the risk management framework
- Coordinate external consultations on legal developments
- Develop and enhance the group’s data protection framework
- Prepare regular data protection reports for senior management
- Maintain Records of Processing Activities (ROPA)
- Coordinate incident response for data breaches
- Liaise with data subjects on access requests and complaints
- Draft and update data protection policies and retention schedules
- Advise on processor/sub-processor registers and contractual compliance
- Monitor international data transfers and support Transfer Impact Assessments
Key requirements
- In-depth knowledge of EU and UK data protection law
- Experience implementing a concise data protection framework
- Experience with consent management systems
- IAPP certification minimum; second knowledge proof welcomed
- Experience in legal department of a medium-to-large organization (publishing/IT/communications preferred)
- Familiarity with cross-functional collaboration in matrix organizations
- Fluent English; business-level in another European language
