Overview
In this role you drive the editorial strategy and content development for BMC Nephrology and BMC Endocrine Disorders from a hub in New York or London. You’ll oversee manuscript handling, advise Editorial Board Members, and collaborate across teams to align with broader BMC objectives. This position offers exposure to a diverse range of topics, strong external relationships, and the chance to influence open-access publishing within a leading science publisher. You will help build visibility and scholarly impact through strategic content and community engagement.

Responsibilities
- Develop journal development strategy for BMC Nephrology and BMC Endocrine Disorders using data-driven planning
- Collaborate across Journals Group on subject-specific publishing strategies and initiatives
- Identify, commission, and develop reviews, collections, and supplements and build partnerships with the scientific community
- Oversee editorial handling of manuscripts with rigorous evaluation for novelty, relevance, and impact
- Make editorial decisions and guide Editorial Board Members while upholding high standards
- Resolve publishing and research integrity cases with resilience
- Work with internal teams to resolve editorial issues and maintain author satisfaction
- Contribute to editorial policy development with evidence-based thinking
- Build relationships with Editorial Board Members, reviewers, and authors through communication and stakeholder management
- Lead discussions with Senior Board Members on strategy, board recruitment, policy updates, and content development
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and engagement of Editorial Board Members
- Organize and lead Editorial Board meetings and strategic discussions
- Ensure Editorial Board members understand and adhere to policies and best practices
- Partner with marketing to increase journal visibility and community engagement
- Develop website content, blogs, and social media to showcase journal values
- Represent journals at conferences and networking events to build relationships
- Foster a supportive, high-performing editorial culture during change or high workload
Key requirements
- PhD or MD level in nephrology, endocrinology, or related discipline
- Substantial editorial experience in scientific publishing
- Ability to critically evaluate scientific content and assess rigor, novelty, relevance, and impact
- Strong decision-making with evidence-based editorial judgment
- Excellent written and verbal communication with a customer-focused approach
- Proven ability to build productive relationships with diverse stakeholders
