About the Role

We are currently seeking a Deputy Editor with research and editorial experience to join BMC Medicine. BMC Medicine is a flagship journal of BMC, publishing important advances in all areas of clinical and translational medicine and public health. The editorial team prides itself on providing an excellent service to authors, reviewers and readers. The Deputy Editor will be working alongside the Chief Editor to lead the journal’s editorial board strategy. The editorial board is critical to the success of BMC Medicine and is central to many aspects of journal strategy. The Deputy Editor will also support the Chief Editor in journal development and management, and line-manage associate/senior editors in the BMC Medicine team. The position is offered on a full-time, permanent basis in our London or Shanghai office on a hybrid working pattern.

Role responsibilities:

  • Grow and maintain the editorial board to ensure adequate subject area coverage
  • Ensure Editorial Board Members receive appropriate training and support
  • Oversee and develop Editorial Board Member engagement within the journal
  • Liaise with the recruitment and onboarding team to ensure smooth onboarding of Editorial Board Members
  • Ensure a significant proportion of journal content is handled by Editorial Board Members
  • Line-management of Associate/Senior Editors
  • Handle manuscripts and work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review, at a 50% workload of a Senior Editor
  • Liaise extensively with editors at other medical journals in the company and with experts in the international scientific community
  • Journal and section-level strategy
  • Attend conferences and visiting research institutions
  • Commission Reviews and Comment articles
  • Ensure Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete state

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

Essential

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a medical or biomedical discipline
  • Previous experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions within a world-class STM publishing company
  • A genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency in reporting research
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be fluent in English (written and spoken)
  • An eagerness to engage with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish
  • Strong workload management and organisational skills
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs

Desirable

  • Experience of working with an external editorial board is highly desirable but not required
