The Sanner Group is a global Contract Design and Manufacturing Organisation (CDMO), offering our customers an end-to-end development service, and taking products from concept all the way through to high-volume production. From our design centre of excellence, Springboard in Cambridge, UK, we develop a wide range of novel medical device and diagnostic products, from single-use consumables to complex electromechanical devices. We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to be part of our rapidly growing team.

The opportunity

This is a role for candidates who have completed several mechanical product development projects. You will have worked in a product company or a technical consultancy previously. In time, you will become responsible for entire product development programmes and lead dynamic, multidisciplinary project teams to develop innovative devices from concept to production for multinational clients. You will build relationships with clients and secure commercial contracts to deliver challenging development programmes.

The Principal Mechanical Engineer role

  • Leading project teams, providing technical leadership and project management
  • Integrating all aspects of product design, working with colleagues from other disciplines such as Human Factors and Industrial to produce complete solutions
  • Supporting transfer to manufacture, managing suppliers and working with Sanner manufacturing sites
  • Delivering technical progress to clients, and communicating risks, timelines, and inputs needed
  • Developing new opportunities into business contracts
  • Understanding technical problems and creating innovative design concepts
  • Reviewing and sometimes producing detailed mechanical designs, carefully considering design for manufacture and assembly
  • Building proof‑of‑principle test rigs in our laboratory, carrying out testing to build understanding and confidence, and demonstrating and selecting solutions

Requirements – you need to be able to demonstrate the following

  • Industry experience of designing, prototyping, and testing practical solutions to engineering design challenges which benefit people
  • Industry experience of developing detailed designs which are ready for manufacture
  • Experience in project planning, project management, and technical leadership
  • Cross‑discipline team working and communication, including written, oral, and presentation skills
  • A degree in Engineering or equivalent technical subject
  • Willingness to work on‑site in Cambridge, UK, with occasional business travel to clients and our manufacturing sites
  • Permanent eligibility to work in the UK. We are unable to sponsor work permits

Desirable – these are not essential but if you have some, they will make your application stronger

  • Professional experience of the full product design life cycle (from concept generation through to prototype and manufacture). This may include some or all of the following: technical requirements and specifications, CAD design, documentation, design transfer, and product testing.
  • Experience with plastics and injection moulding
  • Knowledge of medical device regulations (FDA and ISO) and compiling the required technical documentation
  • Experience with SolidWorks
