Mechanical Mate – Pipework & Mechanical Services

Location Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth

Role Overview

We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Mechanical Mate to support mechanical installation and pipework activities within Devonport Royal Dockyard. The role will involve assisting Mechanical Craftspersons and Supervisors with the installation, modification, maintenance and removal of mechanical pipework, containment and associated services. This is a practical, hands‑on role suited to someone looking to develop their skills and experience within the mechanical construction industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist mechanical tradespeople with day‑to‑day pipefitting and mechanical installation activities.
  • Assist with the installation of freshwater, domestic water, and general service pipework.
  • Assist with pipework manufactured from carbon steel, ductile iron, concrete‑lined pipework and stainless steel.
  • Assist with the installation of valves, fittings, flanges, supports, brackets and associated mechanical components.
  • Assist with the installation of mechanical containment, pipe supports and associated steelwork.
  • Assist with pipework modifications, diversions, extensions, and tie‑ins.
  • Support the safe removal and dismantling of redundant or decommissioned pipework and mechanical services.
  • Assist with draining, preparation and making‑safe activities prior to pipework removal or modification.
  • Support pipe cutting, preparation, jointing, bolting, and general pipefitting activities under the direction of qualified personnel.
  • Assist with pressure testing, leak testing, flushing, and commissioning activities.
  • Handle, move and position materials, tools, equipment, and pipework safely.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and keep work areas clean and free from hazards.
  • Assist with loading, unloading, and distribution of materials around the work area.
  • Follow drawings, instructions, RAMS, permits and directions from the Mechanical Supervisor and Senior Craftsperson.
  • Work safely around other trades and within an operational dockyard environment.
  • Report defects, damaged materials, unsafe conditions, or other issues to the Supervisor.
  • Look after tools, plant and equipment and ensure they are used safely.
  • Support other mechanical activities as required.

Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience working in a construction, engineering, mechanical or industrial environment is desirable.
  • Previous experience assisting with pipework or mechanical installation would be advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Willingness to learn pipefitting and mechanical installation skills.
  • Good awareness of health and safety requirements.
  • Physically fit and comfortable undertaking manual work and handling materials.
  • Able to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Reliable, punctual and willing to develop within the mechanical trade.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Mechanical trade experience or relevant construction experience desirable.
  • CSCS or equivalent site card advantageous.
  • Relevant safety training advantageous.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the required Devonport Royal Dockyard security clearance/access.
  • Additional qualifications such as confined space, manual handling, abrasive wheels or lifting awareness would be advantageous.

Development

The Mechanical Mate will have the opportunity to develop practical experience across a range of mechanical pipework activities and progress towards a Mechanical Craftsperson/Mechanical Pipefitter role through suitable training, experience and qualifications. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate a positive attitude, willingness to learn and commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and workmanship.
