A well-established and fast-growing transportation company specialising in the movement of goods and logistics. This client is committed to providing efficient and reliable services, and we are looking for an experienced Yard Manager to oversee operations at our transport yard and ensure the smooth flow of logistics operations.

Role Overview:

As the Yard Manager, you will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations within the yard, ensuring the safe, efficient, and timely movement of vehicles, trailers, and goods. You will manage a team of yard operatives and work closely with the transport and logistics teams to ensure that all activities are carried out in line with company policies, safety standards, and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and manage all yard operations, including vehicle and trailer parking, loading/unloading.
  • Ensure all vehicles and equipment are checked, maintained, and ready for transport, following scheduled maintenance and safety protocols.
  • Monitor and optimize the flow of traffic within the yard to ensure maximum operational efficiency and reduce delays.
  • Lead, train, and develop a team of yard staff, ensuring that safety, quality, and operational standards are met.
  • Conduct regular inspections of yard facilities and equipment, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Coordinate with the transport team to ensure that all vehicles and cargo are prepared for dispatch according to schedules.
  • Maintain accurate records of all yard operations, vehicle movements, and safety checks.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including health and safety, environmental, and transportation regulations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise within the yard, such as equipment failures or delays.
  • Liaise with drivers and warehouse teams to ensure smooth coordination between the yard and other departments.
  • Monitor and control inventory and stock management within the yard.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in a yard or logistics management role, ideally within the transport or distribution or large machinery sector.
  • Strong understanding of transport operations, including vehicle management, loading/unloading processes, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage a team.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations, with the ability to enforce safety standards.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think on your feet.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to interact with drivers, customers, and management.
  • Computer literate, with experience using logistics and yard management software.

Desirable:

  • Forklift license and/or other relevant certifications.
  • Experience with a busy yard across Logistics, Haulage or the large machinery sectors
  • Health and safety qualification (e.g., IOSH, NEBOSH).
