Our central medical team supports our hospitals and clinics in ensuring the quality and regulatory oversight of the professional standards of the Consultants who work with us. The National Consultant Practice Lead is a pivotal role, leading on the co-ordination and oversight of medical professional standards, including the appraisal and revalidation function for connected doctors. The role is suited to an individual with senior experience of managing professionals, who can demonstrate an excellent knowledge of governance processes, and a balanced and supportive approach to working with individuals and teams.
Key Responsibilities
- To act as a credible and skilled point of advice and guidance for medical professional practice and standards.
- To ensure that robust processes are in place for the granting and review of practicing privileges, with appropriate policy and monitoring systems in place.
- To provide support and training to PP administrators within hospitals.
- To support hospitals in ensuring that processes for managing concerns around consultant performance are appropriately managed.
- To ensure that there are systems in place such that there is a central, up to date record of all consultant concerns that is accessible to the Group Medical Director, Responsible Officer and Associate Medical Directors.
- To ensure that PMIs and other relevant external bodies are informed of consultant concerns, as per contractual and regulatory requirements.
- To work with the Revalidation and Appraisal Co-ordinator to ensure that systems of appraisal and revalidation for Doctors connected to Spire are appropriate and managed in line with national guidance and statutory obligations.
- To work closely with the Patient Notification Exercise team to ensure that there are strong links between both processes.
- To drive improvement in processes using Spire Quality Improvement Methodology and Principles.
- To ensure systems and processes are in place to enable Doctors in Training to work within Spire.
- To link with HR to ensure that appropriate policies and processes are in place where doctors are employed within Spire Healthcare.
- To maintain a close liaison with the GMC and the responsible officers and revalidation/appraisal teams in other independent healthcare organisations and NHS Trusts.
- To oversee the Medical Governance Coordinator in managing the Medical Professional Standards Committee.
- To write and contribute to reports, including Board reports, pertaining to the scope of the role.
- To review, write and develop policies relevant to the scope of the role.

Candidate Requirements
Essential
- Experienced and credible senior leader within a healthcare setting.
- Experience of managing concerns about senior professionals.
- Clear knowledge and understanding of the responsible officer regulations and the requirements of revalidation and appraisal.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including board and subcommittee reports.
- Ability to develop and sustain personal relationships with a wide range of individuals and within groups including consultants and external bodies.
- Knowledge of the principles of medical and clinical governance and their application across health services.
- Experience of matrix working and leadership.
- Experience of writing patient/public information material.
- Experience of managing doctor’s appraisals.
- An understanding of doctor’s appraisals in the post-2012 regulatory environment.
Desirable

- Experience in Medical HR.
