Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions is seeking an experienced Electronics Design Manager to join our New Product Innovation (NPI) Engineering team. The role leads the design, development, and delivery of advanced electronic solutions for pumping applications that set new standards for reliability, efficiency, and performance. Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Management: Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing electronics design team with technical guidance, mentorship, and career development support. Set objectives, manage performance, and conduct regular appraisals to foster continuous improvement and accountability. Recruit, onboard, and retain engineering talent in line with growth strategy and values.
- Project Management: Plan and execute electronics design projects from concept through production, meeting timeline, budget, and quality objectives. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, software, manufacturing) to ensure seamless integration of electronic systems into complete product solutions. Oversee risk management, verification processes, and robust documentation at all stages of the lifecycle.
- Technical Excellence: Drive innovation by staying abreast of trends in electronics, sensor technologies, embedded systems, and regulatory standards relevant to fluid management and process industries. Establish and uphold best practices in circuit design, PCB layout, embedded firmware, and hardware-software integration. Review designs to ensure compliance with internal and external standards (EMC, safety, environmental).
- Stakeholder Engagement & Communication: Act as the main point of contact for electronics design matters, communicating progress, risks, and opportunities to senior management and other stakeholders. Work with product management, sales, and customer support to translate market requirements and feedback into design solutions. Participate in customer visits, demonstrations, and field trials.
- Continuous Improvement & Quality: Promote a culture of quality and reliability. Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for product or process failures. Champion modern design methodologies (DFM, DFT) and robust prototyping techniques.
- Budgeting & Resource Allocation: Develop and manage budgets for the electronics design function, ensuring optimal resource allocation across projects. Monitor expenditure and identify cost-saving opportunities to ensure delivery within financial parameters.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related field.
- Experience: Proven track record in electronics design and development, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role within a high-technology, regulated industry (preferably industrial automation, instrumentation, or fluid management).
- Technical Proficiency: Expertise in analogue and digital design, PCB layout, and embedded firmware development (C/C++, VHDL/Verilog). Proficiency with electronics CAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer, OrCAD, Eagle) and simulation software. Experience with EMC, safety standards (CE, UL), and product certification processes. Strong understanding of sensor technologies, signal processing, power electronics, and system integration. Knowledge of IoT, wireless protocols, and cybersecurity for embedded systems is highly desirable.
- Project Management: Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex projects, delivering on time and within budget.
- People Management: Ability to inspire, coach, and develop engineering talent while fostering an inclusive, collaborative team culture.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Problem Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities with a pragmatic, solutions-oriented mindset.
