The role
We are looking for an ESMU Project Engineer to join our Design Team.
Reporting to the ESMU Engineering Manager, you will play a key role in the design, estimation and project management of bespoke engineered packaged systems, supporting both product development and business growth.
This is a varied and technically challenging position where you will contribute to the development of bespoke and configurable solutions, create and maintain engineering calculation models, and drive continuous improvement across engineering processes.
You will take projects from initial customer enquiry and specification through to design release and lifecycle support.
Working closely with internal stakeholders, suppliers and customers, you will have full design and cost authority for bespoke and configurable solutions while ensuring compliance with quality, safety and regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Design and estimate engineered packaged systems, including heat exchanger, pump and pressure reducing solutions.
- Develop, validate and maintain mathematical models, engineering calculations and configuration tools.
- Utilise engineering and digital tools including Power Platform, MS Excel and simulation/modelling software.
- Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, calculation methods and reports.
- Independently manage assigned engineering projects and tasks from concept to completion.
- Develop project justifications, business cases and project plans.
- Coordinate cross-functional project teams and key stakeholders.
- Size and select Spirax and third-party products, liaising with suppliers as required.
- Manage technical and commercial aspects of contracts with UK and overseas associates.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant legislation, standards and health & safety requirements, including CDM and PER.
- Resolve technical, quality and compliance issues to support customers and internal teams.
- Deliver agreed departmental KPIs and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Your skills
Essential
- Recognised engineering qualification or apprenticeship, such as HNC, HND, BEng or equivalent.
- Experience within a steam engineering environment.
- Strong understanding of heat transfer, fluid flow and heat exchanger-based system design.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a methodical approach.
- Experience creating, developing and maintaining mathematical models for engineering applications.
- Ability to utilise simulation and modelling software to develop products and systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships across all levels of the business.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Advanced computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and Excel VBA.
Desirable
- Experience of manufacturing processes.
- Familiarity with Spirax sizing and configuration tools.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement methodologies, including Lean principles and 5S.
- Basic programming experience, such as VBA.
- SQL familiarity.
- Basic electrical/control panel knowledge.
