Pay Rate to Intermediary: £18.60-£22.97 per hour depending on scale

Spinwell is recruiting for a Vehicle Technician for an excellent opportunity within the public sector.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE VEHICLE TECHNICIAN

  • Carry out service, maintenance and mechanical repairs/modifications of the Constabulary’s vehicle fleet and external partners across multiple disciplines (e.g. pedal cycle, car, van, trailers) to a standard above DVSA MOT and vehicle manufacturer minimum standards.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE OF THE VEHICLE TECHNICIAN

Prior Education and Experience

  • Scale 4
  • Enrolled in training/working towards - BTec, City & Guilds Level 3, or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles or with equivalent relevant experience.
  • Hold a level 2 qualification or above, or equivalent in English and Maths.
  • Hold a full UK Manual Driving Licence.
  • Some knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance.
  • Significant and broad range of experience working in a fleet workshop environment.

NOTE – Scale 4 will only move to Scale 5 once the technician has met the qualification criteria for Scale 5.

Additionally for Scale 5:

  • Minimum entry requirement - BTec, City & Guilds Level 3, or NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles or with equivalent relevant experience.
  • Hold a level 2 qualification or above, or equivalent in English and Maths.
  • Hold a full UK Manual Driving Licence.
  • Significant experience in a broad range of vehicle manufacturer training courses and have pass certificates.
  • Significant experience and training in the use of a variety of workshop equipment and have pass certificates.

Additionally for Scale 6:

  • Level 4 or equivalent and significant experience of working on police vehicles.
  • Level 3 or equivalent in Electric Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles or equivalent qualification.
  • Hold a full UK D1 Driving Licence.
  • Hold a current Cat A motorcycle licence (nominated staff only).
  • Complete a Forklift Driver training (nominated staff only).

Skills

Essential (for Scale 4)

  • Must be willing to undertake an apprenticeship or similar formal training pathway.
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to take a flexible approach to tasks and work on own initiative.
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Computer literate ability.

Essential (for Scale 5 & Scale 6)

  • Ability to carry out auto electrical repairs and diesel/petrol engine diagnosis.
  • Must be a time-served technician having completed an apprenticeship or similar formal training pathway.
  • Be competent and safe in the safe use and operation of workshop equipment under PUWER and LOLER regulations.
  • Ability to problem solve and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to take a flexible approach to tasks and work on own initiative.
  • Good attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Computer literate ability.

Note: Must complete all vehicle-related training courses as required to maintain and improve knowledge/skills and keep up with changes in vehicle design and new model introductions.

Additionally for Scale 6

Specialism 1: Motorcycles

  • Complete relevant Police driver training motorcycle courses.
  • Complete fleet approved Off Road motorcycle repair training.
  • Complete fleet approved On Road motorcycle repair training.

Specialism 2: Specialist equipment

  • Complete and pass an Air Conditioning training course.
  • Specialist Type 1 – Outboard motors - Complete approved fleet training course.
  • Specialist Type 2 – AUX Heaters/Air Con. - Complete approved fleet training course.
  • Specialist Type 3 – Glass Repair (inc. windscreen) - Complete approved fleet training course.

Specialism 3: Emergency Equipment

  • Complete and pass fleet approved Emergency Equipment control system training.

Specialism 4: Manufacture software updates and complex diagnostics

  • Manufacture software updates and complex diagnostics - line Manager verification of capability.

Specialism 5: Digital video recording equipment

  • Maintenance, deinstallation and repair of digital video - line manager verification of capability.

Specialism 6: Commission vehicles

  • Commission new/used police vehicles, including installation, radio equipment as required - line manager verification of capability.

Specialism 7: Mobile maintenance

  • Complete and pass a MOT Tester course.
  • Complete a city and guilds (or equivalent) Tyre fitting and maintenance course.

Specialism 8: Vehicle livery

  • Complete approved fleet training course for livery fitment.

Postholders at scale 6 must also complete a ECDL (European basic computer skills) course or equivalent.
