Job Description:

Working onsite alongside our Peer Support Officer at the Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Cord Injuries Unit (QENSIU), Glasgow, in providing support to patients, their families and friends to help come to terms with a spinal cord injury.

  • Attend the QENSIU to provide onsite support.
  • Build and maintain supportive professional relationships with patients, families, NHS staff and partner organisations.
  • Deliver person-centered peer support, providing insight into the process of recovery through sharing of experience in a positive way.
  • Support patients to connect with families, wider networks and SIS services.
  • Help to organise social activities for patients.
  • Promote Spinal Injuries Scotland membership and facilitate information sharing across NHS and third sector partners.
  • Interact positively and empathically with patients and/or family members.
  • Be willing to share personal experiences with people with a spinal cord injury in a professional manner.
  • Provide sound knowledge through lived experience that supports people living with a spinal cord injury.
  • Build strong, supportive relationships with our service users & members.
  • Help with recruitment, training, support and supervision of volunteers in line with Spinal Injuries Scotland’s volunteering framework.
  • Help with the coordination and delivery of volunteer celebration events throughout the year.
  • Support volunteers and group members with any safeguarding concerns in line with Spinal Injuries Scotland’s policies.
  • Involvement with volunteer events internally and externally.

Service and Organisation:

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with Spinal Injuries Scotland policy.
  • Liaise with other Spinal Injuries Scotland staff and departments as required.
  • Collect data from all enquiries at the office and at clinics, the Spinal Units and Exhibitions.
  • Accurately input and maintain member records using CRM systems.
  • Use Microsoft 365 packages including Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel.
  • Represent Spinal Injuries Scotland at formal meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote the values, ethos and strategic objectives of Spinal Injuries Scotland.
  • Link with external organisations to benefit members.
  • Provide support to the Management team as required.
  • Attend training and development workshops and maintain awareness of personal wellbeing.
  • Be involved with wider organisational activities.
  • Work within the framework of Spinal Injuries Scotland’s policies and procedures.
  • Awareness of own personal needs.

Personal Specification:

  • Lived experience of spinal cord injury, with a strong understanding of related issues and challenges.
  • Ability to act as a positive role model for those with a spinal cord injury.
  • Knowledge of information, services and support available locally and nationally.
  • Friendly, approachable, empathetic, non-judgemental and culturally sensitive.
  • Respectful of NHS staff, patients’ privacy and clinical environments at all times.
  • Confident communicator with patients, families, colleagues and partner organisations.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while managing own workload.
  • Strong problem-solving and organisational skills.
  • Competent using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and mobile devices/apps.
  • Willingness to learn and develop on the job.
  • Full driving licence and access to own transport.
  • PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) membership for working with vulnerable adults (or willingness to obtain).
  • To live in Glasgow or the surrounding area.
