About the role
As a Material Handler, you will play a key role in the safe and efficient handling, movement, sorting, and processing of scrap materials within the yard terminal. Working as part of a close‑knit operational team, you will ensure all materials are handled in line with health, safety, environmental, and operational standards. This is a physically demanding, outdoor role requiring flexibility, teamwork, and a strong commitment to safety. This is a full‑time position working 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm, with occasional late or weekend work (by prior agreement).
Main duties and responsibilities
- Receive, sort, move, load, and unload ferrous and non‑ferrous scrap materials, ensuring correct segregation, storage, and loading in line with yard procedures.
- Operate yard equipment such as forklifts, cranes, excavators, material handlers, magnets, or grabs (where licensed and authorised).
- Inspect incoming materials for contamination, non‑conformance, or safety hazards, reporting any issues promptly.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment, following all health, safety, and environmental policies, and participating in safety briefings and training.
- Assist with basic equipment checks, routine maintenance, stock control, and support daily yard operations.
- Work collaboratively with supervisors, drivers, and other yard personnel, carrying out other reasonable duties as required.
About you
You will be reliable, safety‑conscious, and comfortable working outdoors in an industrial environment. You will have experience in industrial, recycling, or yard‑based roles, a good understanding of health and safety, and the ability to perform physical work in all weather. Strong teamwork, communication, numeracy, and literacy skills are essential, along with flexibility to work overtime and weekends. It is beneficial, but not necessary, to have experience using excavator, crane, or mobile plant licences, a Counterbalance/Reach FLT licence, knowledge of scrap metal, mechanical background, or first aid/H&S certification. A full UK driving licence is required.
