About the Project
The Dream, written and directed by Nnenna Samson Abosi, was first performed in 2020 as a radio play produced by SPID Theatre as part of their Estate Endz community theatre programme. The Dream was inspired by the Mangrove 9, lived experience of the Wind rush generation, Race Relations Acts and Black Power movement, highlighting Black British activism and community resilience. This stage adaptation will celebrate the Windrush generation, cultural pride, and anti-racist history through theatre and storytelling. This will also run alongside a curated exhibition for “Windrush day”.

Your Role as Director:
We’re seeking a skilled and visionary Director to lead the stage adaptation. You’ll collaborate with the writer, guide the creative team, and shape a production that is compelling, culturally grounded, and theatrically engaging
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the writer to translate the radio play into a live stage production
- Lead rehearsals, direct actors, and manage the creative interpretation of the text
- Work with designers and production team to create a cohesive vision
- Support casting, workshops, and script development
- Contribute to outreach and audience engagement alongside SPID’s community team
- Ensure the production reflects the historical, cultural, and emotional depth of the source material
About You:
We’re looking for someone with a passion for community storytelling and Black British heritage. You should be confident in directing socially engaged theatre and working with diverse teams.
- Professional experience directing theatre or live performance
- Familiarity with Black British history, especially the Windrush and Black Power movements
- Excellent communication and team leadership skills
- Ability to work collaboratively under pressure
- Experience in immersive or site-specific theatre
- Knowledge of anti-racist theatre-making practices
- Understanding of the Mangrove 9, Race Relations Acts, Windrush and their cultural significance
