My Client is seeking an experienced M&E Manager to lead and oversee all mechanical and electrical works on a large-scale data centre project in Essex. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and compliant MEP installations throughout all project phases, from pre-construction to commissioning and handover. This is a critical role requiring strong technical expertise in mission-critical environments, exceptional coordination skills, and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders within tight project timelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Delivery & Coordination
- Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of all mechanical and electrical (M&E) works on site
- Manage MEP subcontractors and ensure works are delivered on time, within budget, and to specification
- Integrate M&E packages with civil, structural, and architectural works
- Work closely with the Project Director and site teams to achieve programme milestones
- Technical Oversight
- Review and approve design drawings, specifications, and technical submissions
- Ensure compliance with data centre standards, including redundancy, resilience, and uptime requirements
- Oversee installation of key systems including:
- HV/LV electrical systems
- UPS and backup power (generators)
- Cooling systems (CRAC/CRAH, chillers, etc.)
- BMS and controls
- Identify and mitigate technical risks and clashes
- Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure all M&E works comply with UK regulations, building codes, and industry standards
- Implement and monitor quality control procedures
- Support inspections, testing, and commissioning processes
- Ensure full documentation and certification is completed
- Health & Safety
- Promote and enforce strict Health & Safety standards across all M&E activities
- Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations and site safety plans
- Conduct regular audits and risk assessments
- Commercial & Programme Management
- Support cost management, procurement, and value engineering processes
- Monitor M&E budgets and forecast expenditure
- Track progress against the project programme and resolve delays
- Contribute to reporting and stakeholder updates
- Commissioning & Handover
- Lead commissioning strategy and ensure successful system integration
- Coordinate testing of all critical systems to meet data centre uptime standards (e.g. Tier standards)
- Ensure smooth handover with full O&M documentation and client training
Key Requirements
- Experience
- Proven experience as an M&E Manager or Senior Engineer on large-scale construction projects
- Strong background in data centres, mission-critical, or similar high-spec environments
- Experience managing complex MEP packages (£10m+ desirable)
- Technical Skills
- Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical building services systems
- Familiarity with data centre infrastructure (power distribution, cooling, redundancy design)
- Understanding of commissioning processes and standards
- Qualifications
- Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical, Electrical, or Building Services Engineering (or equivalent)
- Relevant professional memberships (e.g. MCIBSE, MIET) – desirable
- SMSTS / CSCS (Black/Gold Card)
- Knowledge of CDM Regulations
- Soft Skills
- Excellent leadership and team management skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder management abilities
- Problem-solving mindset with attention to detail
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced project environment

- Experience with Tier III / Tier IV data centre projects
