Job Specification: Electrical Design Manager Location: Bridgend, South Wales Contractor: Leading Multidisciplinary Contractor Reporting to: Engineering Director Role Overview The Electrical Design Manager will lead and oversee all aspects of electrical design across a diverse portfolio of projects, ensuring compliance, innovation, and cost-effectiveness throughout the design lifecycle. Working closely with internal teams, clients, consultants, and subcontractors, this role requires both technical expertise and strong leadership to deliver high-quality, coordinated electrical design solutions for projects across commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, and residential sectors. The successful candidate will combine hands-on technical knowledge with the ability to manage teams, drive design standards, and contribute strategically to the growth of the design function within the business. Key Responsibilities Design Management * Lead the electrical design process from concept to completion, ensuring designs meet client requirements, regulatory standards, and project budgets. * Review and approve design outputs, including calculations, drawings, and specifications. * Coordinate designs with mechanical and structural disciplines to deliver fully integrated solutions. * Provide technical guidance to internal teams, consultants, and subcontractors. * Drive innovation and sustainable design practices in line with industry best practice. Project Delivery * Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring design deliverables are completed on time and to the required quality. * Attend and contribute to design workshops, project meetings, and client presentations. * Provide technical support during installation, commissioning, and handover stages. * Ensure all electrical designs comply with current legislation, building regulations, British Standards, and industry codes of practice. Team Leadership & Development * Lead, mentor, and develop the in-house design team, promoting technical excellence and continuous improvement. * Allocate resources and manage workloads to ensure efficiency across the design department. * Support recruitment, training, and professional development within the electrical design team. Commercial & Strategic Input * Work closely with estimating and pre-construction teams to provide design input during tender and bid stages. * Assist in developing value-engineered design solutions to maintain commercial competitiveness. * Support business development by contributing technical expertise during client engagement and bid presentations. * Ensure design risks are identified, managed, and communicated effectively. Skills & Competencies * Strong technical expertise in electrical building services design (LV, HV, lighting, power distribution, fire alarms, data, security, renewables). * Excellent leadership and team management skills, with experience building and motivating high-performing teams. * Strong commercial awareness and ability to balance technical excellence with cost-effective design. * Effective communicator, confident in client-facing situations and cross-discipline coordination. * Proficient in design software (e.g., Amtech, Dialux/Relux, Revit, AutoCAD) and Microsoft Office. * In-depth knowledge of UK building regulations, BS7671, CIBSE standards, and relevant legislation. Experience & Qualifications * Proven track record in electrical design management within a contractor, consultancy, or multidisciplinary environment. * Minimum of 8β10 yearsβ experience in electrical design, with at least 3β5 years in a management role. * Degree or HND/HNC in Electrical Engineering or Building Services (or equivalent experience). * Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards this (desirable). * Membership of IET, CIBSE, or other relevant professional body. * Experience delivering projects in sectors such as commercial, healthcare, education, and industrial
