As a Senior Engineer, you will be a pivotal technical leader within our teams, highly skilled and a results-driven individual with a passion for civil engineering challenges. You will be critical in developing and technically owning robust engineering solutions throughout the entire project lifecycle. You may offer input from initial design, with detailed analysis, to essentially providing expert technical support during construction and final handover. This role offers an impactful opportunity to lead sometimes challenging engineering initiatives and significantly influence project outcomes through your technical acumen and experience. We have a strong pipeline of young and technically competent engineers, and a significant aspect of this role will be mentoring emerging talent, contributing directly to our organisation's success and reputation for excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Health, Safety and the Environment: Prioritise health and safety on all sites and all projects. Help to develop people in your team in every aspect of this fundamental. Assist your Project Lead in all aspects. Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety and environmental regulations and procedures. Promote a safe working environment for all team members, stakeholders and the general public, and lead from the front.
- Site Engineering Execution and Assurance: Lead and oversee all technical engineering activities on-site, ensuring the accurate interpretation and implementation of designs from enabling works through to final project delivery. Drive the execution of precise setting out, surveying, and quality control, ensuring that all construction works adhere strictly to drawings, specifications, and the highest quality standards. Adopt a proactive, “cradle-to-grave” approach to on-site technical delivery, providing expert guidance and resolving engineering challenges in real-time to maintain programme, budget, and technical integrity.
- Technical Leadership and Mentoring: Lead and motivate engineering team members and colleagues, including junior engineers, technicians, and graduate engineers. Assign tasks, provide guidance and support, and monitor performance. Foster a collaborative and productive technical working environment. Pass down the high standard you have set.
- Stakeholder Management: Effectively communicate and collaborate with a variety of stakeholders, including clients, local authorities, community groups, internal teams, and the internal senior leadership team, from where you will be provided guidance. Build and maintain strong relationships to ensure and measure project success.
- Design Coordination and Quality Assurance: Ensure that all activities within your remit are carried out to the required quality standards and in compliance with relevant regulations and legislation, as well as engineering standards. Implement quality control measures and conduct regular technical inspections to ensure compliance and guidance. Provide input into Safety and Environmental considerations and standards.
- Risk Management (On-Site): Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate potential technical and operational risks as they emerge on-site during construction. Develop and implement practical contingency plans and effective risk mitigation strategies in close collaboration with the site team and the Project Lead, ensuring the safe and efficient progression of works.
- Commercial Awareness: In collaboration with your quantity surveying colleague(s), provide technical input for project budgets, cost control, productivity and efficiencies. Identify and implement cost-saving and sustainability measures where possible.
- Contractual Technical Compliance and Site Liaison: In close collaboration with your site colleagues and the Project Lead, provide essential technical input to ensure that on-site works by subcontractors and suppliers strictly adhere to contractual specifications. Actively monitor and ensure all technical contractual obligations are met during construction, providing direct support for the site management of the project and maintaining strong technical relationships with all on-site stakeholders.
- On-Site Technical Reporting and Records: Lead and contribute to regular on-site technical project reports, including detailed site progress updates, technical non-conformance reports, and real-time risk appraisals from the ground. Ensure the rigorous accuracy, integrity, and timely maintenance of all critical site documentation, including as-built records and quality assurance logs, providing vital technical insights for immediate site decision-making and ensuring full compliance with industry standards and project specifications.
Qualifications
- A minimum of an HNC in Civil Engineering.
- CSCS card.
- SMSTS as a minimum (or have SSSTS and working towards it), preferably with a record of continuing professional development in health, safety and environmental standards and awareness.
- Track record of delivery as a Senior Engineer within the civil engineering industry.
- Strong management skills and able to provide mentoring and support to the wider engineering team.
- Excellent Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical information with a variety of stakeholders.
- Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 and industry-standard civil engineering software ("AutoCAD, Civil 3D, LSS"). Programming ability would be advantageous.
- Some working knowledge of different standard forms of contracts, particularly NEC 3 and 4, would be advantageous, including change management.
- Technical Expertise: Solid understanding of civil engineering principles and practices, with a strong focus on delivery, right first time. A proactive and results-oriented approach, with a strong work ethic, resilience and a commitment to project success.
