Overview
As Head of Engineering at Spendesk, you will lead a multi-disciplinary group of 20–30 engineers, aligning technical direction with company goals. You’ll build and nurture a leadership team, own delivery velocity, reliability, and cost efficiency, and drive AI/tooling and platform strategies. You’ll partner with Product and Design to shape scalable, cross-functional solutions and defend the roadmap in a fast-growing fintech environment. This role offers high-impact leadership across Europe and an opportunity to codify engineering excellence and growth.

Responsibilities
- Define multi-quarter tech and organizational strategy aligned with company goals
- Drive architectural decisions and platform simplification across your domain
- Make build-vs-buy decisions and own AI/tooling strategy with measurable impact
- Own area economics: cost-to-serve, infra efficiency, hiring ROI with quarterly plans
- Be accountable for delivery across squads, balance priorities, maintain quality
- Establish group-level KPIs, SLOs, and operating rhythms
- Champion end-to-end observability, sensible on-call, and impactful postmortems
- Plan headcount and sequencing to maximise impact with data-backed rationale
- Hire, develop, and retain a strong leadership team of EMs/Senior EMs/Staff Engineers
- Coach managers through performance conversations and promotions; manage succession
- Represent Engineering in company forums, communicate strategy to engineers and executives
- Champion diversity and inclusion in hiring, development, and governance
Key requirements
- 8+ years in software engineering with increasing scope
- 3+ years managing managers (Team Leads/EMs)
- Track record delivering complex, multi-stakeholder SaaS programmes on time and budget
- Fintech, payments, or compliance experience is a strong plus
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems at scale in production
- Comfort with stack: TypeScript, Node, React, AWS; able to read and question code
- Strong business acumen: unit economics, ROI, trade-offs
- Proven ability to grow managers into better leaders, not just engineers
