Senior Quantity Surveyor

Senior Quantity Surveyor

On-site

We are working with an established specialist contractor delivering complex projects across the data centre, defence and energy sectors.

With more than four decades of industry experience, the business has built its reputation around technically demanding projects where there is no standard solution, combining construction, engineering and specialist project expertise from design through to client occupancy.

The business is continuing to grow within the UK’s rapidly expanding data centre market and is looking for a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join the commercial team on a £15m data centre project in Bristol.

This is an opportunity to join a contractor where the commercial function has a genuine influence on project delivery, working closely with project teams, supply chain partners and clients to drive performance and protect margins.

Your new role

You will take the commercial lead on the second phase of a major data centre refurbishment, following the successful completion of an £8m first phase.

The next stage is a £15m design-and-build project, expanding the existing facility by an additional 2.4MW of IT capacity.

The project includes significant new M&E infrastructure, including chillers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems and CRAH units.

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will have significant ownership of the project's commercial performance, working alongside project leadership and site management to maximise profitability, cash generation and contractual recovery.

This is not a role focused purely on reporting numbers. You'll be expected to shape commercial strategy, influence procurement, manage risk and change, and work directly with the delivery team to achieve project objectives.

You will:

  • Take commercial ownership of the project and provide leadership to the wider delivery team.
  • Develop and implement commercial and procurement strategies.
  • Manage subcontract procurement, negotiation, administration and payment.
  • Lead cost/value management, forecasting, cash flow and commercial reporting.
  • Manage variations, change and contractual entitlement to maximise recovery.
  • Identify commercial risks and opportunities and implement appropriate strategies.
  • Work with project and site leadership to achieve turnover, cash and profitability targets.
  • Manage relationships with key subcontractors, suppliers, consultants and clients.
  • Ensure robust contract administration and compliance with company procedures.
  • Provide commercial advice to senior management and project leadership.
  • Lead, mentor and develop junior commercial team members.

What you'll need to succeed

You'll be an experienced Quantity Surveyor / Senior Quantity Surveyor with a strong commercial background and the confidence to take ownership of a significant project.

You’ll ideally have

  • Proven experience managing the commercial function on construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of the principal forms of construction contract and construction law.
  • Experience with procurement, subcontract management, valuations, variations and final accounts.
  • Strong commercial risk, forecasting and cost/value management experience.
  • Experience developing and delivering commercial strategies.
  • Strong negotiation and contractual skills.
  • The ability to work closely with project delivery and site teams.
  • Experience managing or mentoring junior commercial professionals.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • A commercially minded, proactive approach with strong decision-making ability.

Experience within data centres, critical infrastructure, M&E-intensive projects or other technically complex construction environments would be highly advantageous.

A HNC, HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying is desirable, with MRICS, MCIOB or equivalent experience preferred.

What we’re offering

You'll be joining an established specialist contractor at an exciting point in its growth within the UK data centre market.

The role gives you direct commercial responsibility on a £15m live data centre project, alongside the opportunity to work on technically complex M&E infrastructure and develop your leadership and commercial expertise.

The business also invests in its people through management training and a structured personal development programme.

Benefits include:

  • Car allowance for eligible roles
  • Electric vehicle scheme
  • BUPA healthcare and cash plan
  • 25 days' holiday + bank holidays
