A Fire Protection Site Installation Engineer for a UK hydro power plant shall manage the end-to-end installation, testing, and commissioning of active and passive fire systems (e.g., deluge, gaseous suppression, sprinkler, and detection systems). They ensure compliance with UK standards and strict site safety regulations.

Core Responsibilities

  • Installation & Supervision: Shall be fully conversant with overall project schedule relevant to installation and commissioning of fire protection and detection system for power plant. Supervise the mechanical and electrical installation of fire suppression systems (water mist, foam, CO₂, and gaseous systems), fire pumps, hydrants, and detection lines in both turbine houses and substation areas. Read, interpret, and modify schematic layouts, P&IDs, and structural drawings for underground and surface hydro plants. Coordinate the routing of firewater pipelines to avoid spatial clashes with various components in Power plant.
  • Testing & Commissioning: Conduct rigorous pressure testing, flushing, and operational checks on fire pumps, control panels, and motorized valves. Perform pre-commissioning activities, including hydraulic calculations, heat-run tests, and integration with the Plant Control / SCADA systems.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all installed systems comply strictly with UK regulations such as BS 9999 (Fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings), BS EN 12845 (Automatic sprinkler systems), and NFPA standards where applicable. Execute risk assessments and implement stringent CDM (Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015) protocols. Review materials against UKCA and CE mark requirements. Enforce strict Health & Safety protocols, particularly when working in confined spaces, at height, or in energized electrical areas typical of hydro plants.
  • Project Management & QA/QC: Liaise with Principal Contractors, structural teams, and local UK Building Control or Fire Authorities. Prepare and manage Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), method statements, and as-built documentation. Manage subcontractor teams, track site progress against project milestones, and report to the Project Manager.

Key Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Fire Protection Engineering.
  • Experience: Typically, 5–10 years of site-based experience, specifically in heavy industrial, power generation, or oil & gas fire suppression.
  • Certifications: (If mandatory for UK) CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card (Gold or Black) is generally required for UK construction sites. NEBOSH Construction Certificate or IOSH Managing Safely. Or any other certification mandatory in UK.
