We are looking for a resilient and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist setting in Middlesbrough. This role involves supporting children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, many of whom display challenging behaviour and require consistent, structured support to access education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with SEMH needs
  • Support students in managing challenging behaviour using positive behaviour strategies
  • Build strong, trusting relationships to promote emotional regulation and engagement
  • Assist the class teacher in delivering tailored learning activities
  • Implement behaviour support plans and monitor progress
  • Help create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment
  • Support pupils both inside and outside the classroom where required

Requirements:

  • An enhanced DBS on the update service or the willingness to obtain one
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
  • Strong behaviour management skills and a calm, patient approach
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain professional boundaries
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • A proactive and flexible attitude

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a PRU, alternative provision, or SEN setting
  • Training in behaviour management approaches (e.g., Team Teach)
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice and mental health support strategies
