The Role

We are working with a specialist SEN provision in the Blackpool area that is seeking a dedicated and compassionate PMLD Teaching Assistant to join their team on a long-term basis, starting 1st June 2026. This is a rewarding full-time position supporting pupils with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD). The successful candidate will work closely with class teachers, therapists, and wider support staff to deliver tailored learning experiences and provide the personal and pastoral care that pupils require throughout the school day.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to pupils with PMLD, following individual care plans and education plans.
  • Support pupils with personal care, mobility, feeding, and the use of specialist equipment (training provided where required).
  • Assist with the delivery of sensory, communication-based, and curriculum-adapted learning activities.
  • Support communication using methods such as PECS, Makaton, intensive interaction, or eye-gaze technology.
  • Promote pupil engagement, independence, and wellbeing in a safe, nurturing environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, therapists (SaLT, OT, physio) and parents/carers.
  • Record observations and progress in line with school policies.
  • Uphold safeguarding, health & safety, and equality practices at all times.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience working in an SEN environment (school, specialist provision, residential, or care setting).
  • A genuine passion for supporting children and young people with complex needs.
  • Patience, resilience, and a calm, caring approach.
  • Willingness to support with personal care duties.
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • The right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • Direct experience supporting pupils with PMLD.
  • Familiarity with hoisting, manual handling, and use of specialist equipment.
  • Training in Team Teach or equivalent positive handling.
  • Knowledge of AAC, PECS, Makaton, or intensive interaction.
  • Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant / Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification.
  • Paediatric first aid or epilepsy awareness training.
