Main duties of the job

Be at the heart of our healthcare delivery in this varied, rewarding role. You will work across multiple areas, developing a broad skill set, and play a vital part in supporting patients through every stage of their healthcare journey in our Category B local prison.

What you will do:

  • Support medication safety - assist with medication rounds by completing essential controlled drugs verification checks and managing patient access to medication hatches
  • Deliver clinical services - run primary care clinics including phlebotomy, ECGs, smoking cessation reviews, and sexual health screenings
  • Monitor detox patients - work alongside registered nurses to support patients through detoxification by completing regular clinical observations and assessments
  • Assess new arrivals - register patients in reception, take baseline observations, and complete clinical assessment scores to identify immediate health needs
  • Lead public health initiatives - deliver dry blood spot testing (DBST) across the site as part of our blood-borne virus elimination programme
  • Provide holistic care - support our enhanced primary care unit by delivering personal care and tailored social care packages
  • Conduct outreach - complete welfare checks and wing-based reviews, bringing healthcare directly to those who need it

Job responsibilities

  • NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of working with people with complex health needs.
  • Knowledge of health of primary care, mental health and addiction support and an ability to work across these areas under supervision.

Person Specification

  • Education: NVQ level 3 in health and social care or equivalent experience OR NHS Care Certificate or relevant clinical experience OR Student studying final year of the Registered Nursing Degree.
  • Experience: Demonstration of experience of working with people with complex health needs, in a health or social care setting.
  • Knowledge of nursing standards gained through qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Experience of nursing practice and clinical procedures.
  • Understanding and application of confidentiality.
  • Knowledge or experience of working within a prison or secured environment setting.
  • Experience of work in a multidisciplinary team setting.
  • Experience in responding to emergency situations.
  • Experience in using SystmOne.
