As a member of Spectrum Community Health, the post holder will be responsible for delivering a pharmacy service at HMP Holme House in line with GPhC standards and recommendations outlined in "A pharmacy service for prisoners" and "Safer Prescribing in Prisons". The role involves overall organization, planning and coordination of all pharmacy services on-site, working with the Medicines Management Pharmacist, other Spectrum Specialist Prison Pharmacists, Lead GP, other GPs and the prisons to ensure prison pharmacy services are of the highest quality and successfully integrated into Spectrum Community Health. The post holder will also help patients optimise their medicines through a partnership approach, identify unmet pharmaceutical needs and improve access and service efficiency, including reduction in wasted medicines.

Main duties of the job

  • Strategically plan, organise, coordinate staff and deliver pharmacy services at HMP Holme House.
  • Ensure pharmaceutical care is consistently delivered in accordance with the Medicines Act, GPhC guidance, Commissioner service specification and in line with the recommendations of "A pharmacy service for prisoners" and "Safer Prescribing for Prisoners".
  • Encourage development of better medicines management understanding throughout the wider healthcare team and prison team.
  • Promote good practice in line with therapeutic developments in all prescribing decisions.
  • Assist the Prison Health Care team in achieving NSF targets, NICE implementation, medicines management initiatives and the introduction of electronic prescribing.
  • Work across sites in the North East when required.

Person specification

Education and training

  • Essential: Minimum Bachelor or Masters (BPharm or MPharm) degree in Pharmacy and further relevant post-graduate qualifications.
  • Evidence of relevant continuing professional development.
  • Undertaken training for clinical therapeutics to specialist level (e.g. National Prescribing Centre therapeutic training).
  • Pharmacist, registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Desirable: Non-medical prescribing qualification (or willingness to undertake study).
  • Experience of non-medical prescribing.

Knowledge and experience

  • Essential: Experience of working within primary care.
  • Proven experience of planning, organising a broad range of complex activities in line with strategic plans.
  • Training in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Proven experience of provision, collection, analysis, processing, synthesis and communicating highly complex data.
  • Experience of leading and developing clinical audit and research.
