Spectator Newspapers are seeking to appoint a Journalist.

The Person:

  • The following applicant must hold a recognised journalistic qualification, with a shorthand qualification being preferable.
  • It is essential that the candidate has a full driving licence with access to transport.
  • The candidate should possess strong news instincts, excellent writing skills for news/features, and have the ability to work independently in order to meet tight deadlines.
  • Knowledge of local government, community issues, and courts, in conjunction with an in-depth knowledge of the Ards and North Down area would be advantageous.
  • Experience in photography and developing social media content would be desirable.

Successful applicants will be expected to source stories, conduct interviews, attend events, and produce accurate engaging copy suitable for both print and digital publication.

The Role:

The successful applicant will join the busy editorial team at Spectator Newspapers based in Bangor, County Down, and will work across our three respected weekly titles: the County Down Spectator, the Newtownards Chronicle, and the Mourne Observer. The role will involve supporting our existing editorial teams by providing high-quality local news, features, community coverage, and breaking stories across County Down. The responsibilities will include feature work, general news gathering, and reporting. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to refine their existing skills in all areas of journalism and the wider media industry, with a proactive and ambitious company. The successful candidate will be rewarded with a good salary.
