Spectator Newspaper is seeking experienced and motivated freelance reporters to join a new register of contributors working across our three respected weekly titles: the County Down Spectator, Newtownards Chronicle and Mourne Observer. This freelance panel will support our existing editorial teams by providing high-quality local news, features, community coverage and breaking stories across County Down and surrounding areas.
We are looking for journalists with strong news instincts, excellent writing skills and the ability to work independently to tight deadlines. Successful applicants will be expected to source stories, conduct interviews, attend events and produce accurate, engaging copy suitable for print and digital publication.
Applicants must hold a recognised journalism qualification and should ideally have previous reporting experience in local or regional media. Knowledge of local government, community issues, courts, sport or feature writing would be advantageous.
Essential Criteria:
- Recognised journalism qualification
- Strong news writing and interviewing skills
- Ability to meet strict deadlines
- Good knowledge of local news and community issues
- Access to transport
- Ability to work flexibly, including some evenings and weekends
Desirable:
- NCTJ or equivalent qualification
- Experience in photography and social media content
- Shorthand qualification
Freelance work will be offered on an as-required basis and may include daytime, evening and weekend assignments.
