Spectator Newspapers are seeking to appoint a Sports Editor.

The Person: The following applicant should be an ambitious, outgoing person, who possesses excellent communication skills. The candidate must be highly organised and possess strong interpersonal skills, in order to maintain and develop relationships with the clubs/societies that fall within the publications' readership areas. The following applicant does not require any previous editor experience (although this would be advantageous), but should have experience in managing newsroom resources whether they be human or material. Experience in, and a vision of a multi-platform newsroom, including print, web, and social media would be beneficial. The candidate should possess an aptitude for design and have an understanding of copyright and libel law. Most importantly, the successful applicant must have an excellent understanding of the qualities that constitute great local sports journalism.

The Role: The Sports Editor will oversee and be actively involved in the creation and production of the sports sections of the County Down Spectator and Newtownards Chronicle. Day to day duties will include: developing story/content ideas considering audience appeal, feature work, copy handling, potentially assigning events and stories to individual reporters/photographers for coverage, active involvement in design and layout of the paper in conjunction with our design team, proofreading and editing duties, in addition to personal judgements on issues around copyright and libel law. A vision and an agenda to help the publications achieve their Ultra Local goals, by focusing on connecting with the communities that they serve would be ideal.
