By helping Special Olympics Cymru Wales build partnerships with universities, you’ll create valuable opportunities for students to gain real-world experience in coaching, sport management, and inclusive practice, while also supporting children and adults with intellectual disabilities to access quality sport opportunities. Through this role, you’ll help create lasting benefits for both students and athletes, while supporting the growth of a more inclusive sporting future across Wales.
What are we looking for? We are looking for someone with strong relationship-building and communication skills, who can represent Special Olympics Cymru Wales professionally and help us develop meaningful links with universities across Wales. The most important requirement is that the volunteer has at least three years’ professional or substantial voluntary experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Project or programme management
- Volunteer management
- Mentoring or coaching
- Teaching or education
Our ideal volunteer will also have:
- Confidence communicating with lecturers, placement co-ordinators, careers teams, and students
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage follow-up and maintain professional contacts
- The ability to work independently and use initiative
- An interest in inclusive sport, disability awareness, and widening opportunities for others
- A collaborative approach and the ability to work well with a wider volunteer-led team
It would be especially helpful if the volunteer has:
- Experience of working with universities, colleges, or education providers
- An understanding of student placements, volunteering pathways, or sport-related courses
- Experience in sport, coaching, sport development, or partnership working
- An interest in helping shape a long-term approach to university engagement across Wales

What will you be doing? We are looking for a volunteer to help Special Olympics Cymru Wales build and strengthen relationships with universities across Wales, particularly around sport, coaching, and sport management opportunities for students. The volunteer will act as a key link between Special Olympics Cymru Wales and university staff, helping us create meaningful pathways for students to get involved through placements, volunteering, coaching, and project support.
Key responsibilities:
- Building and maintaining relationships with university departments, lecturers, placement co-ordinators, and careers teams
- Promoting opportunities for students to support Special Olympics Cymru Wales through coaching, volunteering, placements, and sport-related projects
- Identifying new universities, courses, or departments that may be interested in working with us
- Supporting communication and follow-up with university contacts and student volunteers
- Helping us develop a more structured and sustainable approach to university engagement across Wales
- Advising on how to make student involvement beneficial both for learners and for our athletes, clubs, and events
The volunteer will work closely with the wider Special Olympics Cymru Wales team and will help us grow partnerships that support both athlete development and the next generation of inclusive sport professionals.
