School Facilities Assistant Bedford Full-time, temporary until end of December 2025 – may be extended Purpose of the Role You will assist in the effective management, maintenance, and compliance of the school’s buildings, grounds, and facilities. You will support the Site Manager in ensuring that the premises are safe, secure, clean, and compliant with all relevant health, safety, and statutory regulations. This role requires an Enhanced DBS including Child Barred List check Key Responsibilities * Assist with the day-to-day maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the school site, buildings, and equipment. * Ensure compliance with statutory requirements including fire safety, health & safety and security. * Carry out and record regular compliance checks such as fire alarm tests, emergency lighting and equipment inspections. * Support the management of contractors and ensure all visitors follow the school’s safeguarding and H&S procedures. * Set up rooms, halls, and equipment for school events and activities. * Monitor and report any issues relating to building fabric, security systems, or site safety. * Ensure all maintenance and compliance records are accurately maintained and up to date. * Assist in site security, including opening and locking up the premises. * Support cleaning, waste management, and grounds maintenance activities as required. Person Specification Essential * Proven experience in a facilities, site management, caretaking, or maintenance role. * Good understanding of building and site compliance (e.g. fire safety, H&S regulations.) * Ability to work independently and take initiative without constant supervision. * Basic practical skills in maintenance, repair, and manual handling. * Strong organisational skills and attention to detail. * Reliable, proactive, and able to prioritise tasks effectively. * Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a small team. * Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Desirable * Relevant qualifications such as IOSH Working Safely, Health & Safety training, or premises management certificates. * Experience in a school or educational setting. * First Aid qualification.
