SpaMedica is an independent provider of NHS ophthalmology services including cataract surgery, YAG laser capsulotomy, Vitreo-retinal surgery and medical retina intra-vitreal injection (IVI) services. We are the largest provider of NHS cataract surgery in England and are rapidly expanding our provision of IVI services.

We are looking for a medical retina consultant to lead the clinical team working across our IVI services and to act as an advisor to our Medical Retina Service Lead. You will have access to a team of hospital optometrists, nurses and doctors to deliver a world class service with high levels of patient satisfaction. We are proud to be able to offer 100% of our patients an assessment to the medical retina service within 14 days. Our clinics are comprehensively equipped with technology including Heidelberg Spectralis OCT angiography and ultra-widefield Optos retinal imaging. You will be responsible for clinical service development, medical leadership , clinical audit and occasional assistance in service delivery.

All of SpaMedica’s hospitals inspected by the CQC have been rated as ‘ Good ’ or ‘ Outstanding ,’ and we have recently been awarded Investors In People Platinum Accreditation.

Responsibilities of our Medical Retina Consultant Ophthalmologist :

  • Support the expansion and development of our macular service.
  • Lead and support allied professionals to deliver world class macular service.
  • Clinical input and support of complex case management can be performed remotely.
  • Clinical prescribing can be performed remotely.
  • Participate in training inhouse team of registered nurses, optometrists and ophthalmic nurse practitioners to review and inject.
  • Develop and deliver an education program for hospital and community optometrists.
  • Continually audit and improve the delivery of the service and our outcomes. This includes performing clinical governance reviews/audits can be completed remotely.
  • Provide the required leadership and clinical governance framework.
  • Work collaboratively with our Medical Retina Service Lead and team including participation in multi-disciplinary and committee meetings.
  • Ability and desire to travel to support development and training of nurse and optometrist injectors and reviewers.

What Kind Of Person Are We Looking For:

A well organised Ophthalmologist who has already demonstrated clinical ability and experience in their current role. They must be able to work under pressure and have strong organisational preferences. Excellent communication skills enabling them to relate clearly and effectively with both patients and colleagues are essential, as well as excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of people from different backgrounds. Self-motivated with the determination to develop.
