Job Spec: Our client is an independent research and insights consultancy, operating in the fascinating world of international development, researching and investigating fragile states, opinion on the ground and how current affairs and geo politics affect every-day people and how governments communicate with them.

We seek proactive, highly analytical individuals to help us serve the growing portfolio of clients. This is a superb opportunity for ambitious detailed-oriented people with strong interests in research in North and Sub-Saharan Africa with some experience in preparing and delivering information and analytical research products, via mixed methods (quantitative opinion polling, qualitative tools) and project management.

This position offers the opportunity to work in the Africa Business Unit, on a high-growth project that provides analytical assessments across several African countries. The project integrates multiple data streams including opinion research, media monitoring, open-source insights and qualitative research across Africa. The work covers some of the most important contemporary issues (security, democracy, development, defense etc.); these roles will suit people with interests in international politics and backgrounds in research.

Candidates must possess sound quantitative and qualitative research credentials and demonstrate a high degree of analytical report writing, as the position involves direct responsibility for the delivery of robust and high-quality work. The ability to understand the strategic use of research is key. The position also features foreign travel, and we expect a high comfort level with travel to non-Western countries and cultures; candidates must demonstrate a willingness to travel to a variety of locations across North and Sub-Saharan Africa. Candidates must be resident in the UK or have the right to live and work in the UK.

The responsibilities for Senior Research Analyst include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating with multiple research suppliers, in a variety of countries, to collect quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Managing multi-country research projects and overseeing the work of the Research Analyst.
  • Managing data collection and assuring high-quality data.
  • Design new research approaches and methodologies or update existing ones according to ORB’s requirements and principles as well as clients’ information needs.
  • Compose and construct qualitative and quantitative data collection tools.
  • Ensure relevant stakeholders and partners are engaged in research design and planning.
  • Provide data analysis on primary and/or secondary data, ensuring that meaningful techniques are used to analyse the data collected.
  • Report writing, QC and delivery of high-quality analytical products.
  • Keeping abreast of relevant news in regions of study.

We will be looking for Senior Research Analyst candidates who possess the following types of experience:

  • High comfort level with quantitative data (using Excel/SPSS) and excellent writing skills are necessary.
  • Excellent analytical skills, in particular with regards to quantitative data collection, management and analysis.
  • Additional data analysis tools and software experienced (PowerBi, Media Monitoring tools, OSINT skills) are a plus.
  • 4 years of research experience in an international setting. An advanced degree in the social sciences is preferred.
  • Preference given to candidates with Assessment, M&E, Analysis background; knowledge of the methods and techniques of monitoring and evaluation, including developing survey questionnaires, drawing a sample, and assessing the quality of resulting data is desirable.
  • General knowledge of the politics, economics, and societies of Africa.
  • Foreign language fluency in Arabic is essential, French also beneficial.
