The maternity health care assistant will be an effective member of the team providing kind, considerate and professional care to women and their families. You will undertake an agreed range of extended skills to support the Community Midwifery service, working under the supervision of a clinician. You may also be escalated to work within a clinical area of the maternity department when required.

Main duties of the job:

  • Provide direct care to mothers and babies with minimal supervision under the direction of a registered midwife following training.
  • Undertake hearing screening for newborn babies in line with national standards.
  • Work in the community setting, including maternity hubs, as part of a community midwifery team.

Person Specification:

Education:

  • Essential: 5 GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths and English.
  • Desirable: NVQ in Health or Health & Social Care Level 3 or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Essential: 2 years experience in an NHS health care setting as a maternity care assistant or similar.
  • Desirable: 2 years experience in a community care setting as a care assistant or similar.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Essential: Ability to work autonomously with some direction.
  • Essential: Ability to communicate confidently with a multidisciplinary team when necessary.
  • Essential: Willingness to gain accreditation in the NBHS qualification at diploma level.
  • Desirable: Evidence through life experience of any similar or transferable skills.
