Overview

Reporting to the Overhead Line Design Lead or Lead Design Engineer, you will develop and deliver engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed design for Transmission networks (132kV and above). You will provide design calculations, reports, drawings, and define and maintain standards for overhead line installation, supporting the project lifecycle within Scottish Power Transmission Projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop pre‑contract design and deliver projects by defining the technical aspects of OHL systems and associated equipment.
  • Promote Health, Safety, Quality, Environmental compliance and continuous improvement internally and externally.
  • Assess engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance, support accurate budgeting, and recommend construction/outage programmes for OHL circuits.
  • Prepare basic and detailed engineering specifications for OHL system designs for high‑value, complex or business‑critical projects.
  • Resolve statutory, land or other consents regarding OHL routes and assess tender submissions, reporting recommendations.
  • Define OHL equipment requirements for System Construction Authorisation (SCA), Project Technical Specifications and BETTA documentation.
  • Prepare and review OHL drawings and technical specifications for construction, procurement and other stakeholders.
  • Control correspondence and drawings issued to Project Delivery and Pre‑Contract teams, ensuring compliance with legislation, policies and operational requirements.
  • Lead technical resolution of site/construction OHL related issues.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree or HND/HNC with equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in OHL design software and delivering engineering solutions for high‑value, complex transmission OHL projects.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to influence senior managers.
  • Excellent written communication – clear and concise technical reports and documents.
  • Ability to undertake short trips away from home and flexible working hours.
