Control Engineer – Prenton
Starting salary from £53,280 - £66,600 per annum.

Shift‑based role located in Prenton, reporting to the Senior Control Engineer within Customer Service.

Responsible for the control and operation of the ScottishPower electrical networks under normal, outage and fault situations, managing safety, system integrity, customer service and coordination of system access while ensuring compliance with the ScottishPower Distribution Licence.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate change within Customer Services Delivery as the distribution network transitions to Net Zero.
  • Work with new and existing generation partners to utilise flexibility service arrangements and Distribution Restart Zone partnerships.
  • Review and investigate system performance following major incidents and faults.
  • Provide technical advice and support on high‑voltage network matters.
  • Approve and control all outage and network access requests, ensuring risk to network and system security is minimised.
  • Coordinate outage planning and liaise with internal and external third parties for all network activities.
  • Manage customer service proactively and reactively to meet all customer service KPIs.
  • Actively participate in business and organisational change to maintain and improve SPEN performance, productivity and service standards.
  • Implement contingency and emergency plans, escalating significant incidents throughout the business.
  • Complete all statutory reports and paperwork for network incidents.
  • Monitor CML outage requests to minimise impact on system targets.
  • Support provision of operational data so that IT systems remain accurate.
  • Be active in improving processes, procedures and initiatives.
  • Take ownership in improving the safety and customer‑service culture across the shift team and operations business.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Ability to form strong working relationships across all business areas and at all levels.
  • Ability to deal with major customers.
  • Proven aptitude for using and developing new IT solutions.
  • Ability to coordinate a broad range of complex tasks and devise solutions.
  • Working knowledge of key Energy Networks policies, procedures and practices.
  • Accountability for tasks and activities, contributing to team goals with support, advice and coaching when appropriate.
  • Interpretation of asset data and post‑fault analysis of plant and equipment.
  • Ability to define and document new processes for key strategic changes within the Control Room.
  • Knowledge of SPEN policies, procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Strong negotiation, communication, influencing and staff‑management skills.
  • Knowledge of transmission and/or distribution systems and outage planning.
  • Effective decision maker, able to lead when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

  • HNC in Electrical Engineering or relevant experience; a degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Detailed distribution and/or network knowledge essential.
  • High‑voltage operational experience, ideally as a Senior Authorised Person.
