Functional Skills Maths Tutor
The Role
We are looking for an experienced and passionate Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join our education team in Strood.
You will deliver Functional Skills Maths from Entry Level 1–3 and Level 1–2 to small groups of up to 12 learners.
Our learners have a range of complex and additional needs, including autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, global developmental delay, dyslexia, severe learning difficulties and social communication challenges.
You will be responsible for planning and delivering creative, engaging and differentiated lessons that enable learners to develop their mathematical skills, achieve their qualifications and progress towards their individual goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver Functional Skills Maths from Entry Level 1–3 and Level 1–2.
- Develop schemes of work that support individual learning needs and meet delivery standards.
- Create engaging and innovative lesson plans, activities and learning resources.
- Deliver sessions with clear objectives, targets and expected outcomes.
- Differentiate teaching and learning to meet a diverse range of abilities and additional needs.
- Use appropriate strategies and resources to support learners with autism, ADHD and other learning differences.
- Conduct diagnostic, initial and ongoing assessments to identify learner needs and monitor progress.
- Use mock assessments and other appropriate assessment methods to prepare learners for examinations.
- Relate mathematical concepts to everyday life, employment and practical situations.
- Encourage and support learners to develop confidence, independence and positive learning behaviours.
- Maintain accurate records of learner progress, assessments and relevant documentation.
- Provide appropriate feedback to learners and colleagues.
- Work collaboratively with the Quality Assurance Team to maintain and improve teaching and learning standards.
- Attend standardisation, team and other relevant meetings.
- Maintain appropriate CPD in line with Functional Skills requirements.
- Safeguard learner welfare and comply with Safeguarding, Prevent and other relevant policies.
- Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to travel to other work locations when required.
Skills and Experience
You will ideally have
- AET, Cert Ed, PGCE or another relevant teaching qualification.
- Maths GCSE Grade C/4 or above, or Functional Skills Maths Level 2.
- An appropriate Assessor qualification.
- Experience teaching Functional Skills Maths, particularly at Entry Level through to Level 2.
- Experience of teaching learners with a range of abilities, learning needs or learning differences.
- Experience working with learners with SEND or complex/high support needs.
- Knowledge and understanding of autism, ADHD and other learning differences.
- Experience of differentiating teaching and learning to meet individual needs.
- Knowledge and understanding of EHCPs.
- SEN/SEND-related qualifications or experience.
- Strong classroom management and learner engagement skills.
- The ability to create a positive, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills, including accurate record keeping and progress tracking.
- The ability to assess learner needs and monitor progress effectively.
- A patient, resilient and adaptable approach to teaching.
- The ability to work collaboratively as part of a wider education and quality assurance team.
