32.5 hours per week. Part time hours also considered. Payscale: SCP 4. Responsible to: Headteacher and Trustees.
Main purpose of the job: The Learning Support Assistant will provide dedicated support to a pupil with a physical disability, ensuring their safety, wellbeing and full access to learning throughout the school day. This role includes assisting with mobility, including the safe use of specialist equipment such as a hoist, as well as providing appropriate intimate care in a dignified, sensitive and respectful manner. The LSA will work closely with teaching staff and external professionals to implement care plans and support the pupil’s independence, inclusion and overall development. Training will be provided.
Duties and Responsibilities to include:
- Pupil Support
- Build a trusting, consistent relationship with the pupil, using a nurturing and therapeutic approach to promote emotional wellbeing and engagement.
- Provide tailored 1:1 support to ensure the pupil’s safety, access to the curriculum and active participation in learning.
- Support the pupil’s physical needs, including safe mobility, positioning, and use of specialist equipment.
- Deliver personal care in line with agreed care plans, maintaining dignity, privacy and respect at all times.
- Implement and contribute to Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Plans and Personal Care programmes.
- Adapt learning activities to meet the pupil’s specific needs, enabling them to access the curriculum alongside their peers.
- Promote independence, self-esteem and resilience, encouraging the pupil to take an active role in their learning.
- Monitor and record progress, providing regular feedback to the class teacher and SENCO.
- Provide emotional support, particularly during times of challenge or transition.
- Support the pupil’s integration within the classroom, peer groups and wider school activities.
- Encourage participation in group work, social opportunities and enrichment activities.
- Be flexible in supporting other pupils within the class or Key Stage 2 when appropriate, while maintaining the priority of the named pupil.
- Promote an inclusive environment where all pupils feel valued and supported.
- Support for the year team
- Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive environment, in accordance with lesson plans and assist with the displays of pupils work.
- Use strategies, in liaison with class teachers, to support pupils to achieve learning goals.
- Assist with the planning of learning activities.
- Monitor pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record the achievement/progress as directed.
- Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils achievement, progress, etc.
- Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encouraging pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
- Establish constructive relationships with parents.
- Provide clerical/admin support eg photocopying if appropriate.
- Support for the Curriculum
- Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses.
- Undertake programmes linked to local and national learning strategies.
- Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use.
- Prepare, maintain and use equipment/resources required to meet the lesson plans/relevant learning activity and assist pupils in their use.
- Support for the Academy
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
- Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
- Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the academy.
- Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.
- Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.
- Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
- Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtime if required.
- Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips, residential visits and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher.
