Who You Are

As a Technician in the Highways Division, you possess supervisory accreditation under the New Roads & Streets Works Act 1991, with substantial experience in highways or engineering service delivery. You have relevant experience in site supervision and defect monitoring, backed by the capability to read and interpret site instructions, maps, and drawings. Your proficiency in Microsoft Office and bespoke database software is essential. You are communicative, capable of mentoring, and adept at problem-solving under constraints. You exhibit well-reasoned decision-making and can effectively plan, organize, and prioritize your workload. Self-supervised and numerate, you manage customer relations with politeness and efficiency. A knowledge of AutoCAD, risk management, insurance claims procedures, and asset repair concepts is desirable. Flexibility to attend training and occasional out-of-hours work is necessary, and the role attracts essential car user status.

What the Job Involves

The role involves assisting in delivering an effective and efficient Highways service, aligned with service, legislative, and council policy requirements. You will conduct inspections and reporting of the public highway, including structures, drainage, and lighting, submitting defect reports through digital systems. You'll manage work instructions and respond to emergencies, coordinating activities and issuing works orders to contractors. Responsibilities include monitoring illegal or unsafe work sites, liaising with statutory utilities, investigating incidents, and providing court evidence as required. You may assist in the design and implementation of small-scale projects, ensuring compliance with health and safety and contract specifications. Administrative duties include developing quality systems, maintaining accurate records, and utilizing data capture devices for asset management. Engagement with senior officers and stakeholders, managing financial records, and supporting council diversity policies are expected. Occasional representation of the council with external agencies and at site visits outside regular hours may be required.
