The Role: Working with a team of Noise Enforcement Officers, you will be contributing to Southwark Council's aim to reduce noise within the Borough. You’ll be the main point of contact for receiving calls from the Contact Centre regarding noise complaints. As part of the role, you will prioritise jobs for officers, deal with investigations and identify risks for each complaint. In addition, you will manage case loads, advise officers and provide solutions including problem‑solving, report writing and further investigations. You will be required to work a 36‑hour week rolling shift pattern, which involves nights and weekends. There are additional payments in this contract.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond promptly to noise and nuisance complaints, including attending sites during evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Support Noise Enforcement Officers in investigating statutory nuisance complaints, including gathering evidence, making observations and taking measurements where required.
  • Assist with enforcement action, including issuing warnings and supporting the preparation of notices under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
  • Provide clear advice and information to residents, businesses and partner agencies, managing expectations and explaining next steps.
  • Maintain accurate written and electronic records using council systems.
  • Carry out dynamic risk assessments on site and escalate safety concerns appropriately.
  • Operate council vehicles safely and responsibly.

Applicants must hold a full driving licence which is valid to drive within the UK and have access to a motor car for use at work.

What We’re Looking For: You’ll be a confident communicator with the ability to deal sensitively with people from a wide range of backgrounds, often in stressful or confrontational situations. You’ll be observant, resilient and able to adapt your approach based on people’s behaviour and needs.

You’ll Also Need:

  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise letters and emails.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and the internet.
  • Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion principles.
  • An understanding of community safety and socio‑economic issues affecting local residents.
  • The ability to identify hazards and assess risk in public and workplace environments.

Additional Information: Advert Closing Date: 25/02/2026. Shortlisting Date: tbc. Interview date: tbc. This is a fixed‑term post for 18 months.
