As a Senior Engineer in our Highway Development team, you will be at the heart of our response to new developments across the borough. You’ll manage complex development control projects, ensuring all planning applications and street infrastructure proposals meet Southwark’s high highway and public realm standards.

Working collaboratively with internal teams, developers, and key stakeholders such as TfL and statutory undertakers, you’ll guide schemes through design review, mitigate potential impacts, and champion street scene improvements that benefit our communities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage and lead the Highway Authority response to major planning applications and enquiries.
  • Oversee the full design review process for developer-led highway schemes, ensuring alignment with council standards.
  • Coordinate and deliver multiple highway development control projects, ensuring quality, budgetary control, and timely execution.
About You

We’re looking for a motivated and skilled engineer with:

  • A relevant degree in civil engineering, transport, or project management (or equivalent experience).
  • Chartered membership of a professional body (e.g. ICE) or working towards it.
  • Proven experience managing complex highway and public realm schemes from conception to delivery.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK highways legislation, transport planning, and the role of local authorities as Highway Authorities.

The Highway Development Team contribute to the overall Highway Authority’s response to planning enquiries and applications ensuring that suitable arrangements are put in place to mitigate any adverse effects and maximise street scene improvement. The Highway Development Team also ensure that all highway projects are dealt with, from developers and others, and meet the council’s highway design standards by managing their progress through design review process, ensuring a high quality of public realm.
