About the role

We’re looking for a Software Asset Manager to join our Digital team at Southern Water. This is a key role responsible for ensuring we have full visibility and control over our software estate, helping us remain compliant, optimise costs, and support better decision-making across the business.

You will be working across a complex technology landscape to manage licensing, usage and entitlement data. This is a hands-on, analytical role where you’ll work closely with colleagues across the Digital Function and suppliers to ensure we are getting the most value from our software investments while managing risk effectively.

You’ll also play an important role in audit readiness and governance, supporting the business to stay ahead of vendor audits and maintain a clear and accurate Effective Licence Position (ELP). Alongside the technical aspects, we’re looking for someone who’s proactive, collaborative and willing to roll their sleeves up to help shape and develop how SAM is delivered within the organisation.

What you’ll be responsible for:

  • Owning and operating the end-to-end Software Asset Management (SAM) lifecycle, including policies, processes, controls and governance to maintain an accurate Effective Licence Position (ELP)
  • Maintaining high-quality licence, entitlement, deployment and usage data, reconciling contractual rights against actual consumption
  • Providing day-to-day SAM and licensing guidance to IT teams and service owners, supporting deployments, renewals and changes
  • Managing vendor licensing assurance services and supporting audit readiness
  • Producing licence compliance and optimisation reporting to support budgeting, forecasting and renewal planning
  • Identifying and delivering opportunities for optimisation, including licence re-harvesting and rationalisation
  • Partnering with Digital colleagues, Procurement, Legal and Information Governance to support licensing and contractual decisions
  • Assessing licensing implications for projects and IT change, ensuring risks are managed and opportunities optimised

What you’ll bring to the role:

Essential

  • Strong experience in Software Asset Management and software licensing within a medium to large organisation
  • Good understanding of vendor licensing models and audit approaches (e.g. Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, IBM, VMware, Adobe)
  • Hands-on experience with SAM or ITAM tooling (e.g. Snow, Flexera Atlas or similar)
  • Strong analytical skills, with experience working with complex data sets and producing meaningful insights
  • Confident stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to communicate technical licensing concepts clearly

Desirable

  • Professional SAM certification (e.g. IAITAM) or knowledge of recognised SAM standards (ISO/IEC 19770)
  • Experience working with third-party licensing specialists or providers
  • ITIL certification or equivalent experience
