The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department provides direct and indirect patient care. He/She applies the nursing process to plan and implement the care of patients, including patient and family education and continuum of care planning. The Registered Nurse must possess good communication skills and must be able to effectively communicate with physicians, peers, patients and families. He/She works collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team to ensure quality care is delivered.

Essential Functions

  • Providing nursing care appropriate to the condition and needs of the patient.
  • Consulting and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to provide care to the patients.
  • Establishing, reviewing, revising and following the patient plan of care.
  • Administering medications and treatments within the scope of practice for a Registered Nurse.
  • Recording patient care activities including assessment, reassessment, and ongoing treatment notes within the patients' medical record.
  • Using a variety of computer systems.
  • Operating medical equipment used in the care of the patient.
  • Providing patient and family education related to treatment, diagnosis, medications, discharge and self-care.
  • Providing patient care following nursing standards of care in a manner that promotes excellent outcomes, avoids harm to patients, and promotes health and healing.
  • The ability and willingness to follow established Standards of Performance.
  • Must be able to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Must possess the ability to work under pressure, to adapt quickly in changing situations, to function dependently and independently and to be flexible in applying basic nursing knowledge to a variety of settings.

  • Actively participates in Foundation Safety Behavior Tools and Tactics such as Briefs, Debriefs, Huddles, Learning Board Activities, Executive Patient Safety Rounds and reporting of unanticipated and unintended patient events regardless of whether there is harm.

Qualifications

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Education: Must possess an active TN RN license or a compact state license with the intent to obtain a TN RN license within 30 days of hire.
  • Required Skills: Must have current BLS within 90 days of hire date. Must obtain ACLS within 90 days of hire date. Must obtain PALS within 90 days of hire date. Must obtain HWC within 6 months of hire date.
